“Stunning! :)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 October 2011

We used the Lonely Planet to look for hostels and this one was initially our second choice in Ancud.... I'm SO glad we ended up here! We were there in October, just out of Winter and into Spring, and even on rainy days it was a pleasure to stay here.

Martin the owner was very helpful in finding a great tour for us to go and see the penguins and some of the island, and he also makes great coffee! The room was large and had stunning views of the bay through three huge picture windows. The central heating was much appreciated, and the bed was a large double with great blankets. The shared bathroom, the communal kitchen and bedroom were all spotless and cleaned every day, and the breakfasts are generous and with a lovely variety of food: cereal, amazing granary bread, jam, manjar, a large fruit basket and yoghurt. There is a wood burner downstairs, comfy chairs, and a great conservatory that looks out at the bay too - it really is a lovely place to be...

I did not want to leave this place, and would definitely recommend this as 'must-stay-here'!

I stopped in here on my way south on my bicycle... found it a terrific place to stay with a groovy atmosphere, excellent facilities, a really superb common area, breakfast second to none and excellent sleeping arrangments. Nice view over the sea too. Highly recommended.

We had a double room, not very big, but beds were good and it was all clean. The common area is a big room in the entrance where travellers from all countries sat together in the night and had a lot of fun - this COULD be too loud for people who need to rest early because they have to get up early. But it was not a problem for us, as people calmed down at about midnight.

The hostal is in front of the sea (only a street between the hostel and the sea), recepcionists were quite nice (seemed like students) and the breakfast was really good - a lot of fruit, cereals, bred and everything. We had not really warm weather, so we could not enjoy the nice garden.

This place is so well located! The shared spaces are full of natural light, windows overlooking the bay. The kitchen is stocked with everything you need for a fancy supper or just a snack. The breakfast was the best we've had in a month of travels, complete with homemade bread! Our beds were very comfortable. Everything is spotless, clean and new! We loved our stay and hated to move on. Don't hesitate to stay at Mundo Nuevo, it's a great bargain for a super place!

great hostel, good value, includes best free breakfast we've had in Chile, spacious dorms, comfy bunks, lovely communal areas, well-equipped kitchen, decent bookswap, good fast free wifi, friendly staff, good atmosphere, ocean views. Highly recommended.

This hostel has been built with a bit of thought - all the rooms have a view of the seafront as do the communal areas. The rooms are spacious and the dorm I stayed in had excellent mattresses - I had a great nights sleep. The communal areas are comfortable and there´s a sun-room at the front of the hostel which catches the afternoon sun which makes a great place for eating in during the evening (it´s a bit too hot during the afternoon). There´s a large table and wooden chairs in the front garden for use during the summer - great for chillin´/watching the world go by during the warmer months.

The owner, Martin, speaks good English and is very friendly and helpful about providing info not just on Chiloe but on one´s further travels (I believe he´s travelled in Patagonia a bit himself) and he has provided a folder with info about things to do on the island. Not everything has to be done using a tour guide which would obviously work out a bit expensive.

The hostel is fairly new and still well maintained. The cleaning staff are very sharp - almost military in their speed about cleaning/tidying things. They make the beds each day, not something I was expecting in the dorm and the wooden floors are polished daily. I was going to move on to Castro for a few days but I didn´t bother in the end as I felt so comfortable here - I did go to Castro for the day by bus and other people I met ventured out to the National Park for the day so it´s possible to use the hostel as a base for excursions. As well as me, at least 3 other people extended their stay at the hostel whilst I was there which obviously says something good for the hostel.

There is a kitchen for use with all the necessary utensils and equipment.

As with some of my other reviews, the ONLY negative about this place is the partial lack of security in the dorm. Yes there was a lock on the door but no lockers.

Finally, the breakfast. Without a doubt the best I´ve had in South America in 7 months. Home-made bread, homemade jam (kiwi and banana and another jame which I forgot to ask about), cereals, fresh fruit, fruit juice, yoghurt and tea or coffee. Excellent.

Apart from the negative about the lockers (which obviously only applies to the dorm), this is a most excellent hostel which I have no problem in recommending - in fact you´d be missing out on something if you visited the island and didn´t stay here.

Ancud is not the prettiest place on earth having faced seemingly one disaster after another in recent years, but it is a great centre from which to roam Chiloé. And if you want a gem to stay this is it. Run by Martin, a Swiss expat and very knowledgeable, who speaks excellent English (as well as German, Swiss German and Spanish). It is 5 minutes walk from the main bus terminal, make sure you don't get off on the outskirts - if you do jump on a minibus. The views from the front over the bay are simply wonderful and if you (as a couple) want a bit of romanticism/quirky fun ask for room 9! There was nothing negative to say about this place at all. Good breakfasts, very clean and comfortable, excellent location, help and trip available. Be warned about penguin trips in general. You can do this on a local bus and then ask one of the fishermen to take you out (5000 pesos). One guest who we spoke to did this and only saw 5 penguins! A bit much for the organised tours at 35000Pesos - nothing against the hotel but just any tour operators offering this.
