First and most importantly, we chose to stay at the Wiveton Bell having had a superb meal in the past. Again, the dinner that we had this time was excellent. Service and quality of the whole dining experience was first class.
We stayed in the 'Starlight Room' for three nights which overlooks the courtyard at the front of the pub. The room was nicely decorated and had all the amenities that we needed for a short stay. Unfortunately there were some disappointments:
- it was very stuffy (there were three fans provided without which it would have been unbearable)
- room wasn't particularly clean. There were smears on the mirror, dust in places, some cobwebs and at one point an open safety pin on the floor (that wasn't ours)
- bathtowel provided after our first night was threadbare and the other towels were well used and in need of replacing
Our biggest disappointment was the lack of any reasonable gluten free breakfast. On booking and arrival we advised the team that we required a gluten free breakfast for one of our party... in the morning all that was provided as an alternative to the fresh warm pastries was a box of Tesco's own brand Free From Branflakes - £1.50 by today's price. We really expected better than this from a place of this quality especially given the advanced notice we gave.
On our second morning we chose to have breakfast elsewhere (given the disappointment) and hoped for better on our third morning. There are several local farm-shops with gluten free breads and rolls that would have been lovely with the jam that we had in the room - however on the morning of day three there was nothing for my wife as an alternative to the same pastries at all (presumably she was expected to continue with the unopened Branflakes).
On checkout, we were asked how our stay was. We did advise about our disappointment regarding the lack of gluten free breakfast option (not as a complaint but voiced as feedback). Sadly once we'd commented, we were asked what we'd been provided with following which there was no response at all, the subject was changed and there was obviously no interest in our comments at all. That left us both with the feeling that our customer experience wasn't important and certainly wouldn't be fed back any further.
A real shame - we love the Wiveton Bell as a pub and restaurant and will be back to eat however we will certainly stay elsewhere.
