Just returned from a week B&B in Alianthos Garden Hotel with Olympic Holidays from Gatwick . Booked a single room for myself and a double for my brother and his wife. We are all in our 50s-60s. Best hotel in Plakias centre. Was lucky to get a double room for myself for the 7 nights - Room 105 - with balcony and mountain views.

Everything was great - the breakfast, the rooms, the air conditioning (absolutely needed at night), the location a stone's throw from the beach and the service. Wonderful staff - reception, bar, restaurant and cleaning. Never used the pool but looked fine - we always went to the beach. Bought beach shoes to negotiate the stony seashore.

Plakias is a quiet village, a beautiful bay surrounded by mountains, with many good tavernas - especially if you like fresh fish. Kri Kri, Christos and Kyma were favourites but hard to get a bad meal anywhere. Hired a car for 2 days and visited many local villages. Took a boat trip to Previli Beach (lovely but overrated).

Only negative was the long transfer from Heraklion airport - nearly 3 hours with all the stops along the way. But a small price to play for a really lovely, relaxing holiday.

Will return to the Alianthos Garden Hotel next September - this time for 2 weeks at least.

We stayed here for 10 nights on our honeymoon. Plakias is a calm place but there is plenty to do here anyway.

The hotel met all of our expectations. The staff was very friendly, professional and spoke enough English for us to be able to communicate. The hotel is well maintained and was always clean and fresh during our stay, inside the rooms and in the more public areas. You can tell it's a place that takes care of its employees since everyone including the people cleaning and the ones doing the dishes smile and are happy to do some small talk when you walk by.

Overall, we were very satisfied and could absolutely come back!

Overall quality of hotel, location and staff is excellent. The buttet / bbq was very high quality and for bargain price;-)
Also there was life music and even Greek Dancing for all to join..
Hotel breakfast is very good and lots of choice and freshly made things.

Room Tip: all rooms are ok

We always book independently and our request for certain rooms is usually met.
However this can be an expensive way of doing it.
We have never booked through an agency. It's a lot cheaper but you seldom get one of the best rooms I would imagine.
Warm welcome as always

Room Tip: ask for a room over the bar. 1st floor

If you look at my other reviews, you will see that I am a fair and reasonable reviewer that is happy to praise where due and even-handed with my criticisms of places. Please bear this in mind when reading this particular review.

I will begin with the good. The staff in the restaurant are unfailingly brilliant. Theo, the Maitre D’, was brilliant and all his staff were never anything other than friendly, helpful and professional – and it was the same people every day, every shift. They are a credit and lots of other restaurants could learn from them. I took the time to congratulate Theo on his team and he seemed genuinely pleased at hearing this. Sadly, the food does not live up to the quality of the staff. This is not to say it is poor; it is just average buffet-style fare with the occasional highlight but nothing spectacular. However, you rarely get anything special in the buffet, so this is not a criticism. It was nice to see baklava and katifi in plentiful supply though!

The pool is small but big enough for the number of guests, and although the loungers are a bit cramped and you struggle for shade, the area is clean and comfortable. The location is lovely, with hills, mountains and the sea all around, although when the wind blows, it does come through with some force. Nothing a few towel clips can’t solve though.

Unfortunately, all of the enjoyable elements of the hotel have been undermined by the hotel management and their version of customer service.

We originally booked a triple room through an online agent. As we always check our reservations direct with hotels after booking through an agent, we emailed the hotel to ask for confirmation that they had our reservation for a triple room on a half board basis. We received this reply:

“The reservation from date – date for name and name is ok!”

As it happens, we had booked the room though Lowcost Holidays, who subsequently collapsed, so we had to pay a second time through their wholesale agent, Jumbo Tours, to secure our triple room booking. So, we had now paid twice for a triple room (although obviously the hotel would only get paid once).

Triple rooms at the Alianthos have sea/side sea views with balcony and a proper third bed. When we checked in however, we were given a ground double room, not a triple, with a view of a road and a large electricity pylon. The third bed was also just a camp bed. The room was consequently very cramped. Worse, we had the sound of traffic racing past our room all the time and remarkably one of the only bad views I would think you could manage in the whole of Plakias (see photos). At check-in we were also advised that there was a safe in the room but we had to pay if we wanted to use it – a mere 26 Euros. We were also made to feel lucky to have even got a room, as the hotel seemed to think they were not being paid, which is not the best way to greet guests. Due to being very tired from travel, we didn’t contest it too much at the time. When my wife went to complain, she was told the hotel was full (there seemed little evidence to support this throughout our stay) and that was the only room we could have.

I then sent an email to hotel to explain our dissatisfaction, largely due to the fairly poor English spoken at reception. This went unanswered. Unanswered that is, until our last night. We were coming back late from our final dinner and were flagged down by reception (this was approximately midnight). We were told that the manager was away but wanted to explain what had happened. Apparently the manager couldn’t do this on any of the previous 9 nights we were there. Leaving someone else to do your explaining for you and avoiding customers are appalling actions from a hotel manager. We were then told that even though our accommodation voucher stated that our reservation was for a triple room, our agent had booked a double room with extra bed and that they have no contract with the hotel to book a triple (why would a hotel not let an agent book standard rooms?) and so the hotel booked a double room. However, the hotel failed to alert us of this when we asked for confirmation of the booking of a triple back in May. So even though we had twice booked a triple room and asked for confirmation of our booking directly with the hotel, the hotel booked us in a double room and didn’t tell us about the discrepancy between our booking and what they had allocated to us. Worse, they told us our reservation was ok when we checked.

We were consistently told that this was a problem with our agent and we should take it up with them and the hotel was not to blame. I tried to explain that we were the customer and if the hotel had an issue with the agent, that was for them to deal with, not us. I also pointed out they had not only not told us about the room change, but had lied about our reservation. They tried to claim they only said the dates were ok, not the room. We were repeatedly told the hotel was very unhappy that we were unhappy and when I asked what they intended to do to both demonstrate and rectify this, the answer was “nothing”. As we were mere hours from checking out and clearly nothing to be done about the room, I asked if, as some form of gesture, they would waive our sundries charges or even reduce them. We were flatly refused.

To be accosted at midnight on your final night and to be told it was all our fault (at one point I was told I was imagining what we had booked, despite the evidence in print in our hands!) and that they had done nothing wrong and would do nothing to compensate for our terrible room and shoddy treatment was nothing short of disgraceful. On top of this, despite being a ground floor room opening onto a public road and path, we came back to our room to frequently find the patio door left open by cleaning staff. It left me wondering whether the request to pay for a safe was less a request and more a threat. We did wonder whether there would be any value in writing to the manager prior to leaving this review, but if the manager is going to ignore you while you are there, there seemed little point.

The experience over the room and the hotel’s response to us has guaranteed that we will never return here, or to Plakias. We would strongly advise anyone still wanting to book with them to make absolutely certain what room they are choosing to book you in before committing. Plakias is a lovely spot, but I’m afraid this hotel’s approach to customer service is a blight on it.

Room Tip: Make sure you get the room you pay for!
