“Lovley hotel - but you have to pay in advance”
Reviewed 25 October 2007

A lovely place to stay - friendly staff, comfy beds, clean rooms, good food. The only thing that surprised us was that we had to pay in full for our four-night stay when we made the booking - considering this was in August, and we were not going until October, we found this a bit surprising. I suspect this is common to all paradors, but we hadn't stayed in one before so it was news to us.

Stayed October 2007

We wanted to experience a Parador on our Spanish adventure and booked this as well as Parador at Guadalupe. Both were delightful. The journey through the Jerte Valley from Avilla was stunning - even in the mist! Guide books underrate it - gorgeous valley of terraced slopes, goats and little stone cottages, Although the township of Jarandilla was less interesting, the castle itself was both atmospheric and authentic . The plush bedroom, marble spa bathroom, gorgeous palmed courtyard and grand balcony portico were luxurious. The highlight was the stunning restaurant experience. The food was divine, the service impeccable and warm and despite our poor Spanish, we were made to feel special guests. (Don't miss the cod-stuffed pimentos, the roast kid and the quail with wild mushrooms!). For all its indulgence, it wasn't overly-rich or over-priced.
This is a handy location to visit the Monasterio de Yuste and take the 30 minute tour of the palace and church where Carlos IV lived (and died) after his abdication. Its also worth a drive through the National Park to Garangutade de Ollo (Pot in the Gorge), a historic village set in the mountainous terraces.

  • Liked — atmospheric and a fantastic restaurant
  • Disliked — not much else in the town

We went to Spain on our honeymoon to experience all that the country could offer. After leaving Toledo, we were on our way to Portugal and want to stay in a pousada/paradore along the way. The concierge in Toledo made our reservations and we were quite impressed by the castle when we arrived. All felt authentic... the courtyard, shining armor. The accommodations were luxurious but were nice enough knowing that we were staying in a state-run establishment that was 100's years old. The restaurant was one of the best on the trip -- fantastic desserts and I grew to love the olives as a fine appetizer. The evening was topped but sitting on the veranda with the gentle breeze blowing the curtains that gave it privacy. Well worth the side trip!!!
