We applied online for tickets to see the taping of The Tonight Show and when we received the confirmation, we called The Tonight Show to find out how the taping works and we were told that the email ticket is not a guaranteed seat - basically entrance is on a first-come, first-served basis whether or not you have an email confirmation; the "theater" seats 385 people; they open at 10:30 am. and most people arrive around 1 pm. We arrived at noon and there were already over 50 people waiting, sitting on the stone planter walls in the holding area. We got the last two wall spaces. Those who arrived after us had to stand. Around 1:30 pm, a page arrived, lined us up in the holding area and after a short wait, walked us to Studio 11 where we went through security and were given a number. Then we waited in a covered area with bench seating. Everyone had to sit in order of the number we received. The pages checked 2-3 times to make sure we were in number order. We were finally taken inside and seated in the studio at 3:45 pm, and the taping started at 4 pm. The show is taped live, with pauses for commercials - just like on TV, and the taping lasts a little over an hour. It was very interesting and entertaining. Although the waiting was a little long, we were glad we made the effort and went. It was great to see how the program is filmed; to see Jay, the band and the guests live. By the way, bring a jacket. It's not merely cold inside the studio; it's freezing. We didn't bring a camera since the instructions said they were not allowed, but people were able to take their cell phones inside. The cell phones had to be turned off. There is a strict "no photography" policy.

We got guaranteed seats from Universal Studios to see the taping of the Jay Leno show and it was well worth the wait. You get to studio 11 and are "hearded" into a waiting area where it is explained what is going to happen. Then the group is busted up into smaller groups to go thru the security area. They don't want cameras, cellphones, pocket knives etc. inside. If you are just trying to get in as a standby, you are given a number in the order that you enter the gate (so get there early...1 pm) and that is how you will be seated until they are full. If you have a guaranteed seat, you also get a number, but you go in 1st, or near the front of the pack. It is very cold in this studio, so no matter how hot it is outside, take a sweater or jacket inside, especially if you get cold easily. Parking is an issue in this area. There is no studio parking for the public. If you don't mind walking a couple of blocks, there is street parking, but watch the signs for restrictions. Also, there are two pay parking areas across the street from studio 11. One charges $12, to park before noon. The other is only $5. but you have to wait till noon. Taping started at 3pm and we were back on the street by 4:30pm. It was a great show and the band is fantastic!

i took the tour on my second visit to California in 1978. At the time of the big game show rush. At the time NBC in beautiful downtown Burbank was booming with a number of game shows, including Hollywood Squares, High Rollers, Card Sharks, etc.produced there. Also Bob Hope, and the Midnight Special was still well in production there. I saw the tonight show with Johnny Carson there. It was a great tour at the time. I took the tour again in 2010, and it was not the same. Only 3 shows were produced there. The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Access Hollywood, and Days of our Lives and local news. Not much else.

This tour no longer runs. All the guide books and Internet still list it. We went to the gate to enter the studio and this is what the guard told us.
