My biggest regret visiting Bhutan is that circumstances prevented me from extending my stay. I was privileged to speak at a conference along with a number of other travel-jaded colleagues. Zhiwa Ling lifted our spirits in a number of ways, starting with our arrival. We KNEW we had arrived at a special place not just because of the flawless service but because of the warmth of the welcome and the immediate exposure to the beautifully hand-crafted building that exuded pride in the rich unique cultural heritage of the country. This was one hotel where reality surpassed the expectations set by the brochure!
As I was attending one of the largest events held by this privately owned hotel, I had the opportunity to see how the facility and staff stepped up to the challenge. Service was efficient, gracious and of the highest standard. The banquet food was excellent - providing an opportunity to taste a range of local cuisine. The technical support was equal to any provided in large urban centres. The smiles and concerns were utterly genuine.
I loved my spacious but ever so cosy room, lying under a rich down comforter and surrounded by rich beams and local fabrics and paintings, I knew I was in Bhutan from the minute I opened my eyes. The underfloor heating was a perfect antidote to the cold nights.
And finally, it was a joy to discover how much effort the management and staff at Zhiwa Ling had put into applying the national principles of Gross National Happiness to daily hotel operations - minimising waste and doing their best to ensure that the benefits of tourism benefitted the community. To quote paraphrase a previous reviewer Zhiwa Ling is not only a grand hotel but a responsible one too. It is a perfect place to stay if you wish to have authentic experience delivered by local residents while being pampered and soothed!

Zhiwa Ling is a grand hotel with great service. We stayed 2 nights here. The room was large plush and the hotel decor is traditional Bhutan wood carving. Most of the rooms are housed in individual building with 6 rooms in each. The lobby was beautifully decorated. Breakfast was a full buffet and very good.

I've had the pleasure of staying at Zhiwaling a half dozen times--because I don't want to stay anywhere else in Paro! The staff anticipate almost every need, and respond with preternatural speed and professionalism to anything else that suddenly arises. The housekeepers ensure that you have snacks, juice and water in the rooms (gratis), and those who work in the restaurant and bar are competent, capable and friendly.

The evening turn-down service is such a treat, especially after returning from a long hike to any one of the incredible monasteries and temples nearby. The cliffside Tiger's Nest (Taktsang) temple complex and the 7th century Kyichu temple (one of the first in the country) are very close, and you're surrounded by stunning views of the mountains afar and gardens near. But if you don't feel like going out, in the main building is a fully functional temple, full of paintings showing the life of the Buddha and other Buddhist themes; it's a useful primer if you haven't been to many temples before.

Food-wise, there are always at least three selections for dinner entrees, with something to please every palate: Bhutanese, Indian, Continental, Thai. Lunch has a killer panini sandwich, and you can get a great caffeine fix (or decaf) with their house latte. Chocolate lovers will melt over the house tart, to which I have succumbed to more than once. The breakfast buffet includes an array of fruits, an omlet station, a number of hot dishes (meat and veg), pastries and cereals, so there are choices for everyone.

Staying here in the winter or during cool times of the year is a treat as the floors are heated, making every toe toasty; though in both the cottages and main building one should anticipate that the floors can squeak a bit. The beds are cushy and soft, and the linens comfortable (not over-laundered). During warmer months, the grounds are so lush and beautiful, and the outdoor patio is an ideal place for a meal, night or day. Zhiwaling is just wonderful!

The Zhiwa Ling is instantly captivating with Bhutanese style buildings and well balanced landscaping, including a small stream running through the garden. Their 45 rooms are laid out in several Bhutan style lodges that are named in case you get lost. The rooms are large, and very comfortable with heating under the floors. Carved wooden beams and colorful cloth decorations bring life to the Bhutan atmosphere in the room. Food was excellent, especially the breakfast with fresh fruit, delicious home made bread, and fresh juices. Just a short distance is the Tiger's Nest monastery. It is a lovely 10 minute walk to get there, along the river and then the challenging uphill climb to the TIger's Nest leaves you feeling like you have accomplished something.

Room Tip: The rooms that overlook the river are the best - that was almost all of them!

The hotel is situated around 25 mins drive from Paro town and offers majestic picturesque views of the Paro Valley. Beautiful property and rooms / central lobby have a nice Bhutanese decor. However, it lacks a bit in terms of amenities and food (more like a upscale 3 star hotel). The breakfast buffet was not covered properly and was surrounded by plenty of flies everyday. The hotel manager (from NZ) was bit arrogant and initially refused to acknowledge this problem.
The location was still a clincher and makes it a better choice over poorly cramped Uma Paro any day !!

This hotel is amazing. The rooms are absolutely clean, the staff is friendly and very helpful. Their command of English is excellent. The main hotel building is absolutely beautiful with intricate carvings and painted woodwork. We stayed in a guest cottage away from the main hotel building and were completely satisfied. The bathroom was very clean, spacious and spa like. The view was beautiful and is was quiet! The beds are VERY comfortable. The management is knowledgeable and on top of everything. The food in the restaurant had something for everyone and was very good. This is a great place!
