“Great Stay at Cypress Inn”
Reviewed 7 May 2012

Wow...I must admit...I absolutely loved this place. From the vintage feel to the Dorris Day movies to the great food and atmosphere, it was hard to beat. We stayed in room 204 which is a corner room. It faces the back courtyard. We ate breakfast everyday at Cypress and it was great - best continental breakfast I've had at a hotel/inn combined with friendly staff and visitors. The location is prime for walking around carmel and going down to the beach for a morning jog. Can't say enough positive things about this place. By the way - look for Will (the bartender), he was awesome. Great guy and great drinks.

We did not have a good stay at Cypress Inn. To start off it is overpriced and out dated. The rooms they show on their website are not accurate to the tiny room you get when paying $300.00/night. Noise, dogs barking and listening to your next door neighbor chat it up till 2:30a.m. was a bit much for me. The walls are thin and the smell of dog is in the air. Unless you are in your latter part of life enjoy drinking Sherry (as they provide a bottle in your room for you) and looking to have tea time at 2:00 with your dog I would recommend staying at another hotel!!

Dear Epictravel13,
Thank you for your comments. I am sorry and disappointed that your stay was poor enough to warrant only one star. I'd like to take a moment to address your comments. Each one of our 44 rooms is photographed on the website to allow you to make the best choice for your stay. When travelling, I personally like to discuss room choices with on-site staff, and recommend that visitors do the same. Many people have certain requests (such as a larger room, or a quiet room, etc.) that is best discussed in person. The variety of amenities and dining options we provide cater to the wide range of guests and locals that frequent the Cypress Inn. While we ofter a beautiful British-style afternoon tea daily, alternatives include brunch, lunch, dinner, a wonderful array of cocktails, appetizers and wines by the glass (at amazing value) to be enjoyed indoors or outdoors on our Mediterranean-style courtyard. Our downtown location and reputation for being a wonderful gathering place for dining and live music do mean that there will be ambient noise heard from time to time. However, this is generally over by 10PM and we do our very best to accommodate visitors seeking total quiet in parts of the hotel furthest away from the public areas. I'd love to have the opportunity to welcome you back in person, and I have the perfect room in mind for you to enjoy the very best that the Cypress Inn, and Carmel by-the-Sea have to offer. Please reach out to me any time at Fiona@cypress-inn.com
Best regards,
Fiona Ayers (831) 624-3871

We recently stayed overnight at the Mediterranean-style Cypress Inn and also spent two other nights for food and music only. It is very dog-friendly, with all sized dogs welcome in restaurants and rooms. There is a lounge with couches and other seating to enjoy jazz and above average musical entertainment. Hotel atmosphere encourages socializing with people and pets! Service is very good. Not super luxurious, for nice for downtown Carmel.

Each room has individual qualities, so best to check the website and ask very specific questions when booking (re: size, fireplace, noise level, view, etc). We had a smaller queen room (#235) with a nice peek of the ocean. The room and bathroom were small, but clean and comfortable. No noise issues. Great location for nearby restaurants, shopping and beach. Afternoon tea is offered with reservations. Doris Day memorabilia throughout common areas of hotel.

I lived on the Monterey Peninsula for many years and know there are better restaurants (too many to list) and higher quality, less expensive hotels (like Monterey Plaza), but this is a magical experience if you want to completely integrate your dog into your vacation!

Room Tip: #235 is small, but nice peek of ocean and quiet

Top notch staff and the best dog-friendly hotel in which we have stayed. Breakfasts were better quality and selection than the standard fare offered at other hotels. Great Thursday evening entertainment (jazz duo) in the Library Room. All the charm that Carmel has to offer is within immediate walking distance: restaurants, shops and the beach. The only complaint is the room rate was a tad expensive for a street level unit.

Room Tip: Would not recommend Room 114. Although a well-appointed and comfortable room, it opens to the stree...

We did not have the best stay here. The parking situation is difficult as previous reviewers mentioned, we had to move our car twice in the two days we were here. Be prepared for many dogs on the premises and the barking that entails. We had an upstairs corner room that had windows facing the street, both mornings we were woken very early by street sweepers and next morning by garbage collection. Interior of this hotel didn't feel luxurious to me, it's worn out, almost shabby, we paid $300 a night, I know Carmel is expensive but I expected more. What you pay for here is the great location. We would have done better to get a room with the courtyard view, this I would recommend, it would have been quieter.

Room Tip: Get a room with the courtyard view.

I had always wanted to visit Carmel so when a business trip took us nearby it seemed like the perfect opportunity. My wife chose the Cypress Inn and we were very pleased. It really "fit" Carmel.

We had a 2nd floor room on the corner with a partial view. The room was spacious and very comfortable. Fireplace was great as were the chocolates and sherry. I really liked the water system they had - you take a decanter (supplied) to the bar and choose sparkling or still. Yum.

This is a pet friendly inn so if you are doggie phobic that might be an issue but it seemed natural.

The bar and outer patio were a delight and the proximity to many amazing restaurants and
shops made walking easy. Parking is iffy in Carmel but we always seemed to get a spot either on the street or in the wee lot.

Lastly the staff were really gracious and friendly. Thanks!

My wife and I had a wonderful stay at the Cypress Inn at the end of March. The employees of the hotel from the General Manager to the Housekeeping Staff are so very helpful and friendly. We were treated like royalty. The room was unbelievable with a jacuzzi tub and probably the best and most comfortable bed one could hope to ever sleep in. We met many new canine friends during the daily Yappy Hour in the bar. And I almost forgot, the best hamburger in Carmel is served up at the Cypress Inn.
