Garland Park is a great place for walks and hikes on the Monterey Peninsula. This dog- and horse-friendly site features trails that span the shaded Carmel River, stands of cottonwoods and sycamore on an old floodplain, and trails that climb into oak- and maple-studded foothills with nice views. Hikes can range from a half-hour to a full day, depending on your interest and energy. A modern visitor center offers information on the area as well as the only restrooms. The shaded Garzas Creek trail heads to a secluded side canyon of redwoods. Another leads of a waterfall. Farming, logging and homestead sites include a site where fruits were harvested a century ago.

You can hike easily and comfortably on mainly flat walks or you can pick something more challenging. It's all available here. Beautiful scenery, water falls (when it's not dried out), and many varied hikes. (The lower trails tend to have lots of dog walkers, but higher up trails have less.)

My husband and I used to visit this park with our dogs when we lived in the area 20 years ago. Back in the area, we made sure to hike there again (without dogs). It was such a nice hike. As before, we encountered a lot of people in the flat area but not many in the upper elevations.

Wide open spaces for walking, running and hiking. If you bring your dog, be sure to bring towels as they will likely jump into a river and frolic with the other dogs there.
