Gunpowder Point is the historical site of The Hercules Powder Co. nestled in the beauty of a US Wildlife Refuge. The company which owned a factory from 1913-1919 harvested potash and acetone from kelp. Those materials were used to make gunpowder and cordite, a smokeless powder used by British in WW1. Hercules was held by the DuPont Family whom emigrated from France in the 1800's with gunpowder technology escaping the French Revolution. Story boards on the site. You can ride the shuttle into the site for free.
