Description: From the Emeryville fireman's dream of a Speakeasy that he built in 1926, to Steve Vernetti, the original Townhouse Speakeasy bartender who along with his family ran it for 35 plus years after Prohibition ended, the TH has been and remains an East Bay institution. Next came the 70's and 80's when country and western bars, music and dancing were at their peak and the theme at the TH. This period is fondly remembered by Cal graduates who continue to visit the Townhouse and reminisce about their dancing days but do not miss the peanut shells and sawdust on the floor. 1990 was the year that Ellen Hope Rosenberg, the current executive chef and owner, took over an ailing TH and resurrected it from top to bottom. From her inspired American-California style menu to the maintenance of the original construction both in and out. This is a restaurant that has a unique story whose food and ambiance is as authentic as the staff are courteous and genuine.

Did have to wait for a table, the one given to us was empty the whole time we waited, so did start to wonder what we were waiting for. Staff were friendly and helpful. Service was slow, the couple next to us who arrived after us were served faster than our table, their appetizers and entree meals delivered, before we got our mains. Their dessert arrived as our mains had arrived. With friends so we talked while we waited. Potstickers appetizer were lovely, as where the mains, prime rib, baby back ribs and the paella. All generous serves. Dessert offering could be improved upon, nothing really grabbed our attention. Great food, the service received not so great. Maybe it depends on how busy it is, so more staff on board during peak times may resolve the service issue.

Unfortunately, this is as good as Emeryville gets for a business lunch. Throwback to the 1980's in every way. The bar is the best part if you head back after 5pm. Go to Oakland or San Francisco if you want a great meal.

This place had a great ambiance and service was good. Parking was not a problem. My friends really enjoyed their prime rib. They said it was tender and well seasoned. My paella had a lot of seafood and was tasty.

On to the appetizers... the fried calamari batter was a bit thick. It was served with catsup when the menu mentioned an aioli. They gave us the aioli after we asked for it and it was a better pairing with the calamari. It also went well with my paella. The potsticker appetizer was meaty but bland and the mushroom stuffed with cheese did not work at all for me.

Excellent food. Appetizers to dessert. Stuffed mushrooms, calamari, avocado bruschetta were all great. Seafood skewer was so good with all fish cooked to perfection. It was a fun evening. Excellent service.
