The Moonlight Beach Motel is as close as you can possibly stay to Moonlight Beach, high enough up to catch the cool breeze, and to have great views, and yet small enough to feel homey and welcoming. And Moonlight Beach itself is voted the best beach in North County, year after year.

The Motel has changed very little since it was first opened in the 1970s. It is peaceful and relaxing, having quiet hours between 9 pm and 9 am, and being so solidly built that there is hardly any noise from room to room. People with children usually prefer the first floor rooms on the southern end, which usher out into the pretty courtyard, with its tables, umbrellas, flowering plants, and hummingbirds. Family groups eat there and often barbecue. The rooms have good kitchenettes if you like to prepare your own food, but it is also a short walk to many of the best restaurants in Old Encinitas.

From the Motel you can walk a mile to the lovely SRF Gardens, or to Swami's, the world-renown surf break. If you don't want to drive, you can even catch a "Breeze" bus on 101, the Coast Road -- a pretty ride that will take you to any other local beach.

Towards the southern end of the second and third floors of the Motel, accessed from the back of the hotel, the rooms have excellent beach and ocean views.

The hotel decor is admittedly dated, but it's clean and very comfortable. There is no glitz here. MBM is a home from home, and place to experience real Southern Californian beach culture at its best.

Room Tip: Lowest floor for families, upper floors for ocean view

We stayed here two years ago in room 108, which was supposed to be, according to the then manager, the 'prototype" for updating this older motel.
Can't say exactly what happen to the updates in this room or the others.
It still had the same 1980's curtains which make it hard to sleep in the morning, try adding blackouts behind them, it's easy...and it's cheap,...same 1990's TV ? c'mon, flat screens are pretty affordable now... same water damaged toilet seat? which should be embarrassing to the staff/owner, and the same obsolete Zinsco electrical panel. ( to the owner/staff, look up those panels on the web) To continue, having a kitchenette is nice, but no sponge, dish towels, coffee maker? good thing we travel with all that.
We knew what it is, will go back, but here's the deal.
The owner sits on a Gold Mine, it's super close to the beach, and is probably booked all the time...and it's not cheap either...So why should the owner do anything to make it any nicer? including the wi-fi? Because they should....but they don't have too.. because people will come...But "We" as travelers, being loyal, who spend our hard earned cash on vacations in Encinitas as customers and guests deserve it.... If they don't want to update it, then they should sell it, take the money, have a nice life, and let someone make it a really nice place that meets the 2017 standards of travel & pleasure...Moonlight Beach is worth the trip, and this Motel should be the Standard.

Room Tip: Top floors have ocean view but steps, lower is better w/o any steps

You can park you car at this motel and walk to the beach
I love a kitchenette, save on eating out
Local food is good, hipster coffee and boutiques
Feels like the South of France
The Moonlight has some boogie boards and Beach chairs to share!

Must check out the Transindental Meditation Center Garden

Room Tip: 308 is on the top floor Ocean view Good for a couple, if you have kids they have a bedroom option.

Older but well-maintained motel. Close to PCH and Moonlight Beach. We Tate our bikes and ride in the morning, head out to the beach in the afternoon, and then off to dinner at any number of places, many within walking distance. Great place to stay!

Our family has met at this beach for years from as far as Missouri and Mississippi. We love this beach. We now have three generations meeting each year! Thanks to all Encinitas for sharing your beach with us, wonderful lifeguards and those who take care of our beach!!
