Owner description: We are sad to have to inform you, that as a result of the findings of a tree health assessment, many of the trails on Ellwood Mesa have been closed. The Ellwood Main Monarch Aggregation Site (aka Goleta Butterfly Grove) and other Monarch Butterfly aggregation areas on the Ellwood Mesa will remain closed indefinitely. It is not safe for individuals to enter many of the trails on Ellwood Mesa and the Monarch Butterfly aggregation sites due to the fall risk of dead and dying trees. This day trip is well worth the effort. The butterflies are incredible and the trails are beautiful for exploring a rugged part of the Santa Barbara coast.

You half to walk probably a mile or so before you see anything. Lots of people go here, but I didn't see the attraction to the place. We only saw one butterfly the whole time we explored the coast and trees. Not impressed.

We had a nice breakfast at our hotel and went for a leisurely stroll at the Butterfly Grove. It's very dry right now, but you can still see a few Monarchs fluttering by. the walk along the edge of the cliff gives you spectacular photo opportunities

Hiked with family, friends and dogs throughout the grove. Peacefully quiet and a beautiful view of the beach once we left the eucalyptus grove. It was fascinating seeing all the butterflies as the daylight illuminated them as they fluttered amongst the trees.

We searched and searched and talked to a local who said that she had lived there more than 10 years and these last couple of years there have not been any butterflies due to the trees dying. It's a place where you can walk and enjoy nature but don't plan on seeing any butterflies. If you do they'll be few and far between.
