Scalani Hills Residences and Restaurant are about 15 minutes from the Heraklion airport but it feels more like a century - at least for the residences. There are three residences in an outbuilding like classic farm buildings on the outside and with all modern conveniences (except telephone and tub) on the inside. Stunning location located over the vineyards.

Reception is at the winery and despite tours and tastings going on we were made to fell welcome. The residences are a short walk from the winery - a longer walk from the parking lot but most of it is paved and level - and located in a single building with a 19th century farm house setting.

Our room was "interesting" with a combination bed-sitting room, a bath-dressing room, and a separate room for the toilet and a sink (which was bigger than some hotel rooms). There was more than enough room for each activity. The only challenge is it is two steps up from the bedroom to the bath room.

The shower had both rain and hand-held fixtures and no curtain/door so be sure of where the hand-held is pointed before turning on the water. The shower itself was large with hooks for robes and towels. Towels were large and plush, robes were plush, there were slippers but I did not test them. There was a two basin sink with counter space and some unoccupied storage underneath. There were two cabinets on either side of the entrance to the bath-dressing area with lots of space for hanging clothes, drawers, and shelves.

The bed-sitting room had a desk and chair, a couch, mini-fridge, bed and night tables; everything you need (except maybe an alarm clock). It was nicely decorated and comfortable.

Dinner is available at the winery. There are only three menu options each consisting of four courses. We had risotto with mushrooms, salad, chicken stuffed with sun-dried tomatoes, and chocolate cake with ice cream. Since the other two residences were vacant we were the only ones at dinner; food was excellent and service was spectacular......and even with a bottle of wine the meal was inexpensive (it would easily be twice the price in the US)

There is a breakfast that we did not experience because we had an early flight but they made sure we had food, the chef brought a tray to our room covered with good things to eat for the morning.

The staff was wonderful. They did everything they could to make sure our needs were met. This would be a great place to spend a couple of quiet days; just kick back, sit outside, read a good book, drink some wine, eat good food and enjoy life.

Stayed with a friend for one week in one of the lower suites. Lovely spacious room with huge shower and bathroom. Delicious breakfast served on our terrace by Poppi. We ate in the restaurant each night. The dinners were excellent and Poppi the chef would often prepare something extra off the menu for us to sample. The portions were extremely generous, attractively presented using fresh local ingredients. All the staff were helpful with advice on places to visit etc. A wonderful place to stay

Stayed here for two nights in the larger room on the lower terrace. The room was well appointed though missing any slippers given that all the floors are cold stone. Shower downstairs flooded badly after each shower which again was something we didn't need to worry about on holiday. The first morning our breakfast was to be served at 8:30am but the tasting area (where it was agreed to be served) was locked and no one around. We were walking to our car when the Chef arrived to say breakfast was ready?! We ended up leaving without and getting breakfast in Heraklion instead. Our dinner in the tasting area one night was very nice, although the interior of the Tasting room needs repairs (several cracks and damaged plasterboard on the ceiling) and is showing its circa 1990's era age. At night we noticed that some of the illuminated Boutari sign was also not working. Very friendly and helpful staff though, just let down by the tired main winery building and a few details of the residences.

Room Tip: Two level room is dark and has no views. Definitely not alfresco.

Scalani Hills is a winery in the Boutari empire with three self contained residential suites. The setting, amidst vineyards and far from traffic, is idyllic and extremely well located for an early visit to Knossos before the bus tours arrive.
Our room was large and very comfortable: loads of storage space, a great walk in shower, double basins, separate loo and a very very comfortable bed. Even better was the terrace (shared with one other room) where we could breakfast in the early morning sun or drink a pre-dinner glass of the very good local wine.
Service was professional, friendly and unobtrusive. The star of the trip was the cook (Poppy) who produced superb breakfasts and dinners - no request was too much trouble. Even better, the range of Boutari wines was available at regular retail price to accompany dinner.
Both room and dinner were outstandingly good value considering the superb quality of both.

My husband and I want to live at Scalani Hills Boutari Winery & Residences. We're in love with Popi and highly recommend booking dinner in addition to the amazing breakfasts that are included with your stay. We were there in April and stayed in the Liatiko room. It's the smallest of the suites, but with windows in every direction and a private terrace right outside, we couldn't have been happier. I second everything in the review by "lucille f" except to say that I enjoyed the wines we tasted very much.
