Full disclosure: My nickname is The Frugal Guy because I am usually a bargain hunter when it comes to hotel stays. This trip however, the wife did not want to play hotel roulette on the discount websites. She's been working long hours for a long time and wanted to be sure her Southern California vacation delivered what she was looking for. That meant a guaranteed room, facing the ocean, with a King Size bed, high level of cleanliness and breakfast included. We did some research and decided to go for it all with a three day stay at Beach House at Hermosa Beach. With the third day, we got a bit of a discount on the rate across the three nights of our stay. As we checked in mid week, we were also able to secure a room on the third floor, above the hustle and bustle of The Strand. We also opted to pay the premium to face the ocean... guaranteeing three spectacular sunsets and the sound of the ocean rocking us to sleep and the sound of volley ball being played well past sunset and early with the sunrise. The rooms are clean, well equipped with a 47 inch screen LG Flat Screen above the gas fireplace in the living room area and another 20 something inch LG in the bedroom area of this split level over-sized studio apartment unit with two burner stove, mini fridge and fully equipped kitchenette (glasses, dishes, flatware, corkscrew, wine glasses, et al.) One glitch with this arrangement: using the remote to turn of the little TV as we were about to doze off, turned on the larger set at the same time, ultimately requiring the need to get up and aim the remote from a point beyond the bed area.
The bathroom was big, clean and had separate shower and spa tub. The water pressure was typically muted, as all California Hotels use limiters in their showers to conserve water. Finally the towels were big and plush.
ONE COMPLAINT: From the wife, who is lactose intolerant. Breakfast, which was primarily bread, cereal, some fruit and coffee, should have offered either soy milk or yogurt. We wound up buying some of our own at the Ralph's Supermarket across the street.
YOU SHOULD ALSO KNOW VALET PARKING is $24 per day for in and out usage. They park the cars in a municipal garage which backs right up to the hotel. The signage says the garage is 24 hours, so there might be a way to simply park there and use the meters, but the wife insisted we go all in on this trip, so I sprang for the valet...which , in one more moment of disclosure... ate at me just a little bit, because I am The Frugal Guy and paying to park my car breaks one of my most basic personal rules.
In short, Beach House At Hermosa Beach was clean, comfortable and the staff was highly competent. If it's in your price range. Do it.
