The restaurant screams, “Tourist Trap” just because of where it is: You think you know what to expect: high prices for skimpy portions of mediocre food, indifferent service—in this case, wrapped in Hawaiian-ish décor.
And located on Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach (Surf City, after all), what else would you expect?
You may expect Tourist Trap, but what you get is a great dining experience with wonderful food, top-tier service in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We had lunch there today, to celebrate my wife’s birthday; her choice of eating place. We’d walked past Duke’s zillions of times, but this is the first time we’d stopped in.
And found out what we’d been missing.
The restaurant is named for Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, the legendary Hawaiian surfer and swimmer, so the walls and ceilings are naturally festooned with outrigger canoes, oars, and other apparently genuine bits of Island nautica. All in restrained good taste.
The experience: we arrived toward the end of the lunch schedule, were received warmly and cordially, and after about a ten minute wait we were shown to a table for two by a window overlooking the beach, where we could watch the pier, and the surf booming ashore from the hurricane.
The food: we both ordered the shrimp and crab salads; good choice for the hot, muggy day. The salads were large and superb: grilled shrimp, flaky crab meat (real crustacean, not “krab”, the squashed-together whitefish you get some places), tomatoes, sweet onions, avocado, diced mandarin orange, hard boiled egg, all on a bed of fresh lettuce; “bed” not “mountain”; no bulking up with lettuce to hide the scarcity of actual ingredients. My wife had a glass of Rosè (her birthday, after all); I had the flavored ice tea.
The service: our server, Brianna, was prompt, friendly, and thoroughly professional. She worked hard to make sure our dining experience was up to our expectations, and a bit more. We found out why she kept reminding us to “save room for dessert” when she brought dessert. I’d been thinking of a small sorbet, maybe, just to top off a great meal. But what she brought was a Hula Pie, a huge ice cream concoction that looked like a vertical cross-section cut from one of our local San Gabriel Mountains. Macadamia nut ice cream topped with chocolate sauce and more nuts, crowned with waves of whipped cream, with a pair of paddle-sized “sporks”. And a candle—all compliments of Duke’s—Happy Birthday. Absolutely delicious.
The overall experience: superb. It’s not as expensive as you might think, especially considering that you’re renting a world-class view by the hour and dining well at the same time.
And when the server takes the time to write “Mahalo” on your receipt, complete with a happy face, I take that as a sign they’d like us to come back. And we will.
They also validate your parking if you park in the city parking structure.

We've been to the Duke's in Waikiki and Maui and it's always a solid choice. This location didn't disappoint - we were almost able to imagine we had left the main land and were back in paradise. Their mai tais are great and everything was delicious - you can't go wrong with the macadamia crusted fish. The kahlua pie is a must for dessert and is huge - more than enough to share among 4 people. Service was attentive and it was nice to be by the beach. It's clearly popular and was very crowded so reservations are highly recommended.

Great little Hawaiian restaurant right by the pier. Great ocean views, you’re literally right on the beach! Mahi Mahi was excellent.
