La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club
Ranked #14 of 24 Hotels in La Jolla
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 9 April 2012

We chose this hotel due to its reputation and location on the beach in La Jolla. Even though the temperature was a bit cool for much beach time, the exceptional location makes this a preferred choice for a special occasion or a get-away. The staff at check-in and in each of the restaurants was always attentive, with a genuine smile and the feeling that they were really pleased you were there. The housekeeping and landscape/grounds teams were equally friendly and outgoing.

This hotel and club has a great deal of history with its tennis affiliations, and while we do not play, one can appreciate and value the extensive photos, trophies and memorabilia.

It is apparent that the management and ownership of this complex are attentive to their guests, by their well trained staff that demonstrates real hospitality. We will share a separate review for the Marine Room Restaurant, but the service and cuisine there are EXCEPTIONAL!

Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Any of the rooms and suites on the ocean side are a treat!

I was attending a conference in San Diego and opted to stay off site. The private beach and tennis courts were what drew me to LJBTC and they were worth the 10 minute drive to and from the conference daily. The club has, evidently, been an attraction for decades but has been well maintained. There is a definite feel of nostalgia but the units were clean, roomy, and fully modernized. My wife and I stayed in a one bedroom unit with kitchen overlooking the ocean. There was a full refrigerator, range, microwave, cooking utensils, coffee maker, large LCD TV, and free wireless Internet access. Our unit had three rooms in all- bedroom, kitchen, and TV room with desk. The beach was beautiful. The tennis courts (20 or more) were in excellent condition and there were daily offerings for group instruction (drill, clinic, or cardio-tennis). There was also private instruction available. The fitness center was very useful and practical offering all one really needs while on vacation (treadmills, stationary bikes, elliptical machines, cybex station weight machines, dumbells, mats, Swiss balls, resistance tubing, and medicine balks). The pool was heated with three lanes for lap swimming. The staff was great (even offered to print up brackets for the NCAA basketball tournament for me so I could work on my picks). Units and grounds were well maintained. Parking was free. Close to San Diego and all of the local attractions. This is a quaint, classic resort and pleasing alternative to the ordinary- especially if you enjoy swinging a tennis racket.

We spent four nights at this hotel. The rooms and furnishings are pretty dated, but its location--right on the beach--is perfect for any and all beach activities. The service is wonderful--attentive without being pretentious. There are plenty of activities for all ages--tennis, pool, ping pong, etc., but our favorite was the fire pit on the beach. For a reasonable sum a family can order a fire pit, which will be set up at 5:00 on the beach, complete with chairs and a wind screen. We made s'mores (kits available at the hotel store) late at night, which our teens loved. Note for families with teens: the pool closes at sunset, and there is no hot tub. Tennis is also limited after dark.

Room Tip: We got a unit with a kitchen so we could cook to save money. It was equipped with the basics for fo...

While the individual rooms are tired, almost musty, this resort overall gets very high marks for service, excellent food, and a location on the beach that can't be beat. Our business meeting had the great fortune to be held in the Walnut Lounge, a spectacular meeting room with ocean view bay windows and steps from the beach. Our meals exceeded expectations, and the atmosphere of the resort contributed to highly informal yet productive sessions all day for two and a half days. Bonfires on the beach each night solidified the group's sense of community and common purpose, which was an important goal for this meeting. With free wi-fi throughout the resort, comfortable common areas, and excellent staff, I highly recommend it for business travel and meetings.

This Club has tennis and a beach. That is not easy to find. It has great people and services and many types of packages that you can design by just telling them what you are interested in doing or having. We travelled far to get there and everything was worth it and then some. The Club has a long history and is updated in lovely ways. When you walk the grounds, take a tennis lesson, play tennis, go to the beach, eat at Club dining with its fantastic view and superior food you feel comfortable and tended to. The area around it offers great variety: nature, animals, shopping, dining and touring. We went on business and leisure and we both felt relaxed and rewarded by the experience.

Room Tip: As far as I could see, all the rooms were quiet. Perhaps a corner suite would allow for one wall th...

What a wonderful place! We were already planning a trip to San Diego to see the Grandparents, but we were not sure of how to find a beach that would be safe and comfortable with our three year old. Boy, La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club was the answer. We were there during spring break so they only had a one-bedroom suite available. Costs a bit more but what a great place to stay. Beach is absolutely beautiful and everything was provided. Pool was a balmy 83 degrees. Tennis lessons were excellent, the pros are easily some of the best in the U.S. Finally, the Marine Room is one of the great dining experiences in the country, even though it may be a little more formal than you may be used to, if you love truly wonderful food prepared by an exceptional chef, this is the place.

We went for a family vacation, myself, my husband, two girls and my parents. We were able to share a spacious 2 bedroom suite! Stunning location RIGHT on the beach, many activities for all of us, fantastic food and very clean. It is an old hotel with lots of history. Nice and low key (not flashy). The rooms were updated and provided a great kitchen! Service was friendly, helpful and welcoming. We will be going back. Tip: sharing a suite with family or friends allowed the cost of the stay to be more affordable. Beach toys, chairs, fire pits...you name it, everything you ever needed for a great vacation!

Room Tip: Pay the money and stay on the oceanfront -it is truly magical! Share a suite if you can, allowing th...
