Description: Established in 1980 D. Z. Akin's has been a San Diego institution since they first opened their doors back in 1980 and is still a family run business spanning 3 generations. From the Menu: "D.Z. stands for the two of us, Debi and Zvika Akin. Having lived in Los Angeles, we frequented many good delicatessens and knew that San Diego was in need of one. Considering how we both enjoyed cooking, and how even our first date revolved around a bowl of chopped liver, we decided to pack our bags, move to San Diego and take a stab at cooking for starved delicatessen lovers. With only a small budget, good old-fashioned recipes, the courage to experiment, hard work and long hours, 'D.Z. Akin's' came to be. We made a commitment to ourselves that we would never compromise on quality and we would fill our plates high with the finest delicatessen available... With the help of wonderful customers and perseverance, we became, beyond our greatest expectations, a thriving business."

Was so happy with our meal!! I took some clients here for work at their recommendation and everything was amazing! We ordered a corned been Rueben and pastrami Rueben and split them. Both were amazing! The other guy had a French dip which he devoured too! The fried pickles... OMG the fried pickles were the best! And we also had a pierogi appetizer that I will have to go back for again!
The had an amazing looking bakery but I couldn't eat another bite!

It's hard to please an ex-New Yorker. Have not yet found decent corned beef south of the San Fernando Valley. Bought very good baked goods on the way out after dinner.

I discovered this place many years ago. At the time it was in one small unit of a small strip mall shopping center. Now it has taken over the entire place. They're 10 times bigger than when they started, and for good reason! The food is great and it's not too expensive (not cheap either, but that's a good thing)

Best matzo ball soup in SD. Only place I've found that serves real latkes. Make sure you are hungry when you arrive. Take out is excellent.

This is the second time we have been to D.Z. Akins. The first time was over the top. Best food and service we have had at a restaurant like this. This time the service was still great but the food and prices have changed. My wife had a BLTA which was served cold. But we have always had the bacon hot. This time the bacon was cold and greasy. I had bacon and eggs with a biscuit and gravy. Bacon and eggs were fine but the potatoes were burnt and the gravy had a very strange after taste. I believe they were using Italian sausage for the gravy which if fine, but the milk part tasted like the milk had sour. The prices seam like they have gone up by about two dollars a plate. The bakery in the deli is still fantastic. We will give them another try on our next trip.
