“Fun Little Cabin, But No View of the Lake”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 October 2011

Despite it's name, not all of the rooms have a view of the lake. The "cozy cottage" we stayed in had a view of the motel and parking lot. But it was still fun to sit out on our little covered porch and relax. There are some large trees that kind of give a feel of being in the woods.

The location is excellent for visiting Mono Lake. It's across the street from the lake although there is no lake access at this point as far as I can tell. It's about 20 minutes to the South Tufa viewing area. The Mono Market - for groceries - is about 100 feet away as is the 395 which is the main access to all local attractions and the location of most of Lee Vining's shop.

Nicely's restaurant is a few doors away. The food is adequate, but there isn't much choice in Lee Vining. There's a BBQ place nearby, but it was closed for the season. For good food, hop in your car and drive south to the Who Nelly Deli at the Mobil gas station at the Tioga Pass. It's surprisingly good - and popular.

Our cottage (#9) was just right for two. We stayed two nights. It is a true cottage: no walls are shared with any other cottages and there is adequate, landscaped space between the cottages.

It's small, but not too tight. There's a full-sized closet, plenty of drawer space and it's nicely decorated with wood paneling and a raised wooden ceiling. There are plenty of windows and a ceiling fan.

The bed was not as comfortable as I'm used to, but passable and warm. There's a two-burner stove which we couldn't get to light, a larger-than-expected mini refrigerator with small freezer, microwave, coffee-pot, utensils, pots, pans, dishes.

I didn't like that there were no paper towels or dish towels. Also the supply of bath towels was skimpy. And the maid didn't even replace the obviously empty Kleenex box. Also the supplied toiletries - especially the shampoo - are the lowest class possible.

You can park right in front of the cottage. Check-in and out was easy.

There isn't a high-class hotel in Lee Vining, so compared to your other choices, the Lake View Lodge is adequate. I'd stay here again when visiting the area.

Alan

On our trip from Sonora via Sonora Pass - Bodie - Mono Lake (South Tufa) we spent a night in Lee Vining before entering Yosemite NP the next day. The best place to be here is the Lake View Lodge. We can confirm everything in the review "Great cottages".
We also made our internet reservation for one of the newer "Cozy Cottages" - an excellent choice, because you pay a similar price as for a Queen or King room, but you get a much quieter location behind the main buildings, which face the main road. You park your car right in front of the cottage and enjoy the privacy for a quiet (romantic?) night. The place is clean, nicely decorated and offers a Kitchen and bathroom.
Coffee Shop, Grocery and other stores are all next to the Lodge.
Best "restaurant" in town: WHOA NELLIE DELI in the MOBIL Gas station!

Room Tip: Best deal for 2 persons: Book a Cozy Cottage with queen bed, bathroom and kitchen. Very quiet, niece...

Because we wanted to visit Mono Lake, we ended up in Lee Vining. Not a lot is going on in this town but the Lake View Lodge definitely deserves a good review. We stayed in Cozy Cottage 14 and were nicely surprised by it. The cottage is very clean ,spacious, well-equipped and has a wonderful bed. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. When you are in the area, this is without any doubt the place to pick.

Room Tip: Cottage 14 is great.

We booked 2-nights in September at the Lake View Lodge whilst traveling between Death Valley and Yosemite). It was very easy to find being the first building on the right (when traveling from the South) on the 395. I had booked online a few months and on arrival we were allocated room 55 which was on the ground floor, in the block furthest away from reception and near the garden which I had requested based on other reviewers comments.

We were able to park directly outside our room which made carrying in luggage easy. On initial entry to the room there was a bit of a musty smell but this soon went with the door left open for a while. The room was of a good size with 2-comfortable queen beds and a sink, fridge and microwave in the room itself along with a table and chair. There was also WiFi which although the owner had warned may be intermittent due to location, we found very efficient and of a good speed for the entire of our stay. The bathroom was a reasonable size with a shower over the bath with plenty of hot water at a good pressure. Our room was not cleaned during our 2-night stay but we realised that we had been left a large amount of towels to last us for both days and quite frankly I am quite able to make the bed myself so this was not an issue.

Although breakfast is not included in the price there is a good coffee shop in the grounds of the Lodge which offers residents a 20% discount on breakfast. It was very nice to sit in the beautiful gardens (someone is obviously a keen gardener here) and look at the mountains and lake.

We stayed here specifically to see Mono Lake and to visit the ghost town of Bodie which is well worth a visit but be prepared for a number of miles of unmade-up road to get there. Lee Vining is just outside of the Yosemite Park and has a few restaurants (we ate at ‘Nicely’s’ for both nights) and also the famous ‘Whoa Nelli Deli’ at the gas station just off the turning towards Tioga pass (need to drive a few minutes as a bit too far to walk). Also make a visit to the Mono Lake Committee shop and information centre for some good background to the area and an excellent book and gift shop. There is a small supermarket a couple of minutes walk from the Lodge which is good for supplies.

We were happy with our room during our stay and slept well - we did not notice any road noise as there is very little traffic at night. My only advice would be perhaps ask for a first floor room to get more of a view (numbers 56-60) and to avoid any potential noise from people in rooms above the ground floor (not a problem during our stay).

Room Tip: Ask for room 56-60 for peace and a view

This is perfectly located fo enter the park, and a pleasant looking prooperty although there are really very few "lake views" However, we had reserved a king suite. The room is divided into a sitting area and a sleeping area, both small with no windows in the sleeping area so there was no air flow through the room. On our first night, the room smelled bad and was extremely hot. There were no other rooms available. The air conditioning unit (old style) roared and the room smell was constant. We changed rooms the next morning to a double queen size room. The room was very pleasant and good size but the beds were hard as a rock and the pillows old and uncomfortable. Staff is pleasant but not service oriented. We did not stay for our third night but checked out and stayed on the other side of the park......my recommendation.

Room Tip: If you must, one night, top floor, ask for the rooms facing the lake.

Like others said, this is the best lodging option in Lee Vining. It’s the first motel you see on your left when you enter Lee Vining from Yosemite. It’s right on the road, in fact, all motels, restaurants, and stores are on the road, Rt. 120 in Lee Vining. The entire town of Lee Vining is only 1/10 mile long. If you drive too fast, you’ll miss the town. The Lake View Lodge is very busy in the summer and the fall. They’re usually fully booked. So reservation is necessary. They don’t charge your credit card when you make reservation, and they have a 24 hour cancellation policy. The property landscape is very pretty with lots of flowers, plenty of chairs and tables in the garden. But there is no lake view.
The room is no thrill, but clean. It looks like a typical Best Western. It has a 2nd sink with long counter in the room. There is a mini fridge and microwave next to the sink. Very convenient. In the bathroom, the sink is outside the bathing area. The tub/shower looks updated with bath fitter. Great water pressure in the shower. The beds are a bit hard, pillows are very comfortable. The AC/Heater unit works great. It put out heat very fast and warmed up the room quickly. We can hear the shower from other rooms, very loud, sounded like our town bathroom was in use. We can also hear the road noise/traffic. But Lee Vining is a very small and quiet town. There was no traffic at night or early morning. Next to the motel is a grocery store that sells everything, including sandwiches and some hot food. Great value for food to go. They also has a stamp machine that sells postcard stamp. Next to the grocery store is the Nicely restaurant (American food, reasonable price) and a BBQ restaurant (kind of pricy). It was a very easy and nice walk to the restaurant from the motel. Lake View Lodge does not have continental breakfast. There is a coffee shop that sells pastries and coffee, but no real food or breakfast. We have to walk over to the Nicely restaurant to have breakfast and dinner, which is not bad at all. But just the fact the room rate at $159 before tax and fees is not cheap. With no breakfast makes the motel kind of expensive.

Room Tip: Get a room away from the grocery store.

Lee Vining is a wide spot on Rt 395 in CA. We stayed at a 3 diamond rated lodge there. We would rate it 2 star at the most. The people were nice and the rooms average. The beds were the worst we encountered in our 2 1/2 weeks on the road. It says it is the premier place to stay in Lee Vining and perhaps it is but you may want to drive a few miles further or less, depending on where you are going to find a larger town. Our goal was something convenient to Yosemite and that it was. If this hotel was rated 2 star, our expectations would have been lower and perhaps this rating a bit higher.
They give you a coupon for 20% off breakfast at their coffee shop. The coffee shop is just that - coffee, some croissants, pastries, etc. If you want a full breakfast, go to Nicely's. Not a super restaurant but adequate.

Room Tip: We asked for a place to put our cold items. There is no fridge in the room. They unlocked a door and...
