Venice Beach Hostel and Hotel
Reviewed 20 July 2014

At $40 a night this hostel is not cheap... But the rooms are nice (girls 6 bed dorm has just been re-vamped) lockers in the room, en suite shower was really nice. Each bed had shelf, light and plugs, and little curtains for privacy.

Great location, right next to the beach, be careful wandering round at night though!

Ezra and Carl are really cool and friendly, and often joined us for a drink on the outdoor terrace.

Good common area and they have make your own waffles for breakfast, and serve a vegan pasta and sauce for free at dinner!

Good option for backpackers in Venice!

I am a person that has traveled alone every year for Halloween for the past few years on a tight budget... This hostel is the perfect place for me. It is literally right at the beach and the weather is so beautiful and sunny.. a lil chilly at nights so bring a jacket for outdoors! The shared rooms are perfect.. the beds are clean and the girls are always very nice and abide by the rules. It is clean, ( but can use a little Febreeze) has a locker inside the room, and has a great outside deck that has a great view of the beach... and they even have a piano and pool table! The shared rooms are very inexpensive and they give you free breakfast and dinner, although I have never eaten it my roomie said the pancakes were really yummy. The liquer store is right down the street just make the RIGHT outside the hostel and its a few blocks down on the left hand side... next to the Venice Canals ( a must see, simply breathtaking). The nightlife is great! Also, Santa Monica and Marina Del Rey are very close to Venice so make sure you sight see. There are many artists of all types along the boardwalk that work very hard to put a smile on you're face so TRY TO TIP THEM! The beach is very clean.. but yes, of course you will see homeless people. Do not let them intimidate you, in most cases they are friendly and just want to be left alone. I look forward to staying there this Halloween ... and saying hello to Simon again.. he was very kind to me. VENICE BEACH IS AMAZING! .. so if you are on a budget but want to have the time of you're life, this is the place for you... trust me, you will be at the beach or the nightclubs most of the time anyway( who wants to be in a hotel all day and night? not me!!)... this place is just a place to crash and shower. There is a charge for the key deposit so make sure you ask so you are no surprised when you arrive ( YOU WILL GET THE MONEY BACK, JUST MAKE SURE YOU TELL THEM 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE THE DAY BEFORE YOU LEAVE YOU WANT A CASH REFUND) Have fun and enjoy the Venice sunsets!.. and all the glory of the golden coast! It is paradise!.. SO, SIP A PINA COLADA AND RELAX. PS. DO NOT FORGET TO TIP THE MAIDS AND SIMON, THEY WORK HARD : )

This is a pretty rough place. It's fairly inexpensive if you get a good deal booking online, and the location is too good to be true (just on the beach front with a nice bar to play pool at across the street, bus stops to downtown LA are near and you can just walk to Santa Monica easily). On the other hand things can occasionally get pretty loose. There are wild roof parties going on every once in a while on the rooftops involving people who don't even stay at the hostel (which means that they can access the rest of the building too), they ask for your room number at the door but they unlock it for you regardless of what you come up with (friend once jokingly yet literally said 'room one billion three or four thousands' and they still gave him access), and most importantly they give shared room access to random local drunk bums in the middle of the night if they can afford to pay for the room, which might sound like a good social plan to some, but actually stinks quite bad (literally) in reality because the rooms are small, the smell can get terrible, those guys are often obnoxious and the lockers are a joke. I guess I got lucky none of my stuff ever got stolen there (I stayed for ten days). The bunk beds are hard on the back, but overall sleep quality is decent, if you don't lose your sleep over worrying about your belongings. The kitchen is a joke, but there is a very nice restaurant across the street at the corner, in addition to other cheaper fast food joints and convenience stores. The bathrooms and showers are good. This place is not for the weak hearted, but if you can handle it it's a good spot to crash at, just make sure you get a cheap deal.

Oh, and don't pay for the internet there - the wifi from the bar nearby can be reached from anywhere in the building, it is reliable and there is no password.

This hostel is very near Venice Beach. It's old and not cleaned to the highest standards (towel had brown smears on it, sink in my private room full of hair, bed had crumbs on it). There is an additional $100 key deposit that they didnt mrntion when booking, and if you dont have it in cash they charge you to use a credit card. Dinner included was a bean chilli & rice which was ok. Come for the location and if youre a party person & dont mind staying somewhere stained & slightly dirty. Someone smoking inside and couches smelt of smoke. I'm far to uptight for this place! ;-)

Do not believe anything on the website. Misleading and straight up false advertising.
Only good thing is the close proximity to venice beach. But even that- its a dodgy area.
Security at the hostel is non existent-safes broken and the locks on windows. Rooms are in a terrible state,as is the whole hostel.
We stayed in a double private room. Expected a fridge,tv,microwave and a nice room. None of the above!! on approach to staff-quote "the website is old". why not update it then to show the true simplicity of this dump??? no air con, cigarette butt burns on bedding. Toilets, showers=old and need replacing
staff- arrogant, rude, unhelpful and straight up dont care. Except simon.
You do get free breakfast and dinner(if you like straight rice) so can save money.
Smoking in common room aint cool.
Honestly- dont go here! Spend a few extra dollars and stay in santa monica. Better safer n cooler area during the day and especially at night!!! You can still easily walk or hire a bike to check out venice beach.
Avoid this hostel unless you like being confronted with rudeness begging and horrible conditions

This place is really awesome. At first sight it looks run down and shabby, but the cool people and atmosphere really make up for that. It's pretty clean and it's right down the block from the beach, so it's a great location. They offer free breakfast and dinner, what more can you ask for? Plus the German receptionist (Simon) is serious eye candy. Being able to look at his beautiful physique, smile, perfect hair and gorgeous eyes is enough reason to stay there. Most of the other staff are hot too!!!

This hostel is practically on the beach front. Great location. You have to park a few streets away in order to park for free bit not a massive issue. The staff were very helpful and our private room and bathroom were very impressive. Large, airy and clean. The place was a little worn but it added to the overall feel for me. Didn't really use the common areas so can't comment on those.
