“Hard to see”
Review of Laurel Cannyon

Reviewed November 7, 2014 via mobile

Laurel Canyon is a busily trafficked, steep canyon with lots of trees. There is some great architecture here, but it's hard to actually see due to traffic, sweetness and trees. And don't everything about walking it. Check out Nichols Canyon instead.

The scenery is something to behold .I enjoyed the mountains , the homes and the switch backs that keep the driver on his toes and the other occupants scared witless .Great fun

There is a wealth of literature about this place and the music that emerged from it in the 60s and 70s. Being a fan of that music I had to see the place, albeit decades too late. You can see the appeal immediately. Despite being only a few minutes drive from Hollywood and Sunset blvds. and all their attractions, Laurel Canyon feels entirely different and removed from the urban atmosphere. Roads wind up the canyon and its sides, and houses perch preciptiously in positions that would surely be deemed unsuitable for building in most places - and this is an earthquake-prone area ! I may be biased but there still seems to be some magic in the air. I understand why so many of my musical heroes (Neil Young, Spirit, Chris Hillman etc) were based here at one time or another. Well worth a look round and there's still some good music coming from here now too eg Jonathan Wilson.
