This review is late as we stayed here 5 months ago. I havent written it sooner because I am a procrastinator, not because we didn't like the hotel. In fact, we liked it so much that we are returning next month. We stayed in one of the garden units that are behind the hotel. Our unit was one of the few garden rooms that have an ocean view - and a window seat to go along with it, which just added to the charm of the unit. There was also a fireplace and antique furniture including a massive old armoir. This unit was quite large. The building also had a nice verandah. No-hassle parking is really easy, right outside of the units. For dinner, we ate in the lobby bar which has an absolutely charming atmosphere with a great old bar. We also had breakfast at the hotel - very nice. As mentioned the hotel is located right in the heart of town, amidst all of the shops and overlooking the bluffs and the sea. Service was friendly, efficient, and accommodating. We are looking forward to our return trip next month, and probably many more as we live only 3 hours away.

The Medoncino Hotel, built in 1878, is elegantly refurbished and the suites are wonderfully furnished with incredibly comfortable beds. The fireplaces add a truly romantic ambiance to a cozy evening. The welcoming lobby has windows looking out on the beautiful cliffs that the Northern California Coast is famous for. Sipping a local wine and nibbling on a delicious appetizer from the amazing kitchen at the hotel is a perfect way to unwind after the trip there!
The village of Mendocino is an amazing place to stroll around and visit the collection of eclectic shops offering everything from delicious chocolate, organic food store, to gift shops with anything you could want as a memento of your trip. We loved our trip and can't wait to go back!

If you are planning to stay IN the Mendocino Hotel, make sure they guarantee that it. Their "hotel" is mostly garden suites that ramble two blocks EAST from the ocean front hotel and are in little pods of three and four units. Ours was covered with trees and brush and was dark all of the time. The room itself was large but vacant. The king bed was hard and old without even a soft topper of any sort. The television was an ancient big box unheard of almost anywhere now. There was no microwave or refrigerator and we had to walk two blocks to the hotel to get ice and an ice bucket. The fixtures needed updating and were wood? For the amount of money that they ask for this room, I would have been very disappointed. We got it on Groupon at least, but i was ready to check out the moment I saw it and move elsewhere. There is wifi but only from the lobby. When I called from the room to inquire about it, they didn't even tell me that there was a password, just in case I got it. There are many other lovely places right in town that would be a much cleaner (not musty) and have a view of the ocean. The town was lovely but the "hotel" was a disappointment.

Very nice old hotel, beautifully appointed with original antiques. We had a fireplace in our room and we used it each night. A room on the second floor would have been quitter because we were right by the front door and you could hear it bang each time someone came in or out. Still it is a nice place to enjoy the Mendocino Village.

We had two nights and three days in Mendocino ~ with perfect weather and things to do. We checked into the hotel. The hotel was built in1878 with Victorian style furnished room, fireplace and private bathroom, Wonderful setting and the room was large and lots of space. We had dinner in the Lobby Bar area because we did not make reservations for the Victorian Restaurant. Actually we were happy that we were in the Lobby Area as it is so beautiful and we had a table by the window so the view was perfect.

Room Tip: Avoid room 316 as it is right by the front door (and the door is heavy and loud and you hear it each...

The hotel, originally built in 1878, is located across the street from the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. My wife and I stayed two quiet and relaxing nights in the Garden Suites, which are located one block behind the main hotel. Our second story suite included a very comfortable King bed, a large multi-windowed room combining the bedroom and living room, a fireplace, and a separate marble tiled bathroom with a jacuzzi tub and shower. The decor is a combination of 1920s and 1940s art deco -- and shows its age. Complimentary off-street parking conveniently adjacent to our building.

We had one maintenance issue involving a lamp fixture -- which was resolved within 30 minutes of the front desk being notified. The only major issue was our inability to connect our Windows 7 laptop computer with the hotel's wireless internet access. We had no problem connecting at the local internet cafe. Microsoft says some older routers have a problem connecting with the Windows 7 operating system. I suggested to the front desk clerk that the hotel manager consider upgrading the hotel's router.

We ate our evening meals in the hotel's Bistro Bar cafe which is located within the bar. Excellent choice of menu options at a very reasonable price -- but the Bistro will be reviewed separately. The hotel is an excellent choice for someone wanting a central location from which to explore the town of Mendocino on foot or the Mendocino coast by car. Just remember... this is a hotel, not a bed-and-breakfast inn. "Exploring the world one meal at a time..."

Room Tip: The Garden Suites are a more quiet option than the rooms in the main hotel.

The rooms are ok, clean and large, but the employees certainly lack in their approach to customer service. They were having a water problem in the main part of the hotel and the restaurants were not open for most of our stay. Overall the place is fine, my only complaint is the way the people at the front desk and other staff acted. They were not welcoming at all and were not friendly. The rooms were clean, but the shampoo & body wash was not replaced after the 1st day.

Constructive comments such as this are always appreciated and offer opportunity for improvement. The water issue that was mentioned was being addressed during this guest’s stay and was an unfortunate situation that we were unable to prevent. Customer service and guest comfort is our first priority and as a guest stated on April 27 of this year the Mendocino Hotel is “A great place to go for friends!”.
