When I first lived in the San Gabriel Valley in the mid 70's, there were many family owned and operated delis and restaurants. As the area has become increasingly Asian, only the best family Italian restaurants and grocers have survived. Frumento's has not increased its square footage, so if you want serious Italian groceries, Claro's on Valley Blvd in San Gabriel would be a better choice. If you want an excellent casual pasta meal, prepared salad, or sandwich, this is your place. Tables now take up more space than grocery shelves.
I have eaten pasta here with red sauce and alfredo sauce at various times. Both excellent This last time I got lunch for myself and some friends-- one of whom is part Italian and very particular about her Italian food. She was very happy with her pasta with Marinara, and my other friend was happy with his torpedo. Half of my sausage and pepper sandwich was enough to satisfy me for lunch. You can get a garden or caesar salad, numerous varieties of antipasto, cole slaw, potato salad, pasta salads as side dishes The deserts -- napoleons, eclairs, and gelato -- look amazing, but I am always so full when I eat here, I haven't tried them.
This is not a fancy place. You get your pasta on a real plate, but sandwiches and salads are served in a wax paper lined basket. Disposable flatware. The food, however, would be not be out of place if served on white cloth table cloths and napkins.
It is best to call ahead to order lunch as their is a hospital across the street, and they are very busy during lunch hours. They will pack just about anything for take-out.
