Our top floor room was 69 steps from the lobby. No elevator because this is a "historic landmark" and the owners don't seem inclined to activate the obviously historic elevator visible in the lobby. The rooms are so noisy the management leaves ear plugs on the bed stands. The sounds of seagulls penetrate the windows and the noise of neighbors penetrates the walls. The bed was not uncomfortable, the linens were adequate, the towels were a bit less so (one tore as I used it), the showere was hot and water pressure was wonderful. Also on the positive side, the location is on a main street which feels less touristy than most Monterey hotels. One can walk to the wharf and even to the aquarium if energetic (though the climb up to room will make you hesitate to venture to far out). There was a farmers market going the day of our arrival which required us to park behind the hotel to check in but the ambiance of the street scene was lively and appealing. The included continental breakfast was adequate but not memorable except that the coffee was better than expected.
