You know the adage: You get what you pay for? This applies in spades to the Del Monte Pines in Monterey. If you are looking to stretch your budget with a lower grade of lodging, there are some things you need to understand about this place.

When checking in, you will find the staff are very friendly which is always a good thing. There are some aspects of your stay that they stress: Parking, No Smoking in the rooms, Internet Access, and the Breakfast.

Starting with the Breakfast, which the manager pointed to a small shelf in the office where breakfast would be, and then applied the instructions that you were to take it back to your room. While not really interested in free hotel breakfasts, as they typically redefine the term to Coffee, Tea, juices, and a selection of pre-packaged rolls or muffins. Here, the term is further redefined: One pitcher of what looked like orange juice, and one tray of muffins cut in quarters. Yum! just what every growing boy gets out of bed hoping to get.

Parking is indeed free, and there are just enough spaces for every room. Spaces extend across one of the exits to their small lot, so be prepared and look closely for lines that were painted years ago.

One thing I found that actually worked here was the no smoking in the rooms. It was apparent that no one had smoked in the room I was given, which was very nice.

On the key is a password to their "internet access" that is hand written on some tape. They really spared no expense here. If you are looking for more than access to the internet, and actually intend on getting data, information, emails or web pages to return from the internet, this is not the place for you. On the Internet it typically takes about 380 milliseconds for data to get from the west coast of the US to say, India. Thats less than a second to go halfway around the world. At Del Monte Pines, it takes more than 4 seconds to data from San Francisco or Los Angeles...assuming that you get it at all. This means that while access is free, they do not have internet that is usable.

Beyond what they stress, there are things they don't seem too worried about. Like simple maintenance. I say piles of pine needles collected from the last big wind neatly in front of the doors of some of the downstairs rooms. Gutters have rusted out years ago. So while it looks ok from the street, once you pull in the details start to tell a story of neglect.

Inside the room, there was carpet which was probably worn out ten years ago, which should have been changed about the same time as the mattress. While the bed did have sheets, which appeared clean, its aways best to ensure the bottom sheet covers the entire mattress not just the top portion.

I could go on.

If you want to save some cash on a room in Monterey and are considering Del Monte Pines - set your expectations really low; or keep looking.

Room Tip: Look elsewhere

The exterior was ok in and similar to other surrounding motels in appearance. We came early and our room wasn't ready yet which I totally understand and was willing to wait. However, the man just yelled at housekeeping to hurry up with her work while she was cleaning a room and showed us what our room actually was. Not at all what we expected so he said I can upgrade you for more money it wasn't a lot and we agreed. That room wasn't ready either and he called after housekeeping again and her delayed response because she was cleaning a room resulted in him yelling at her telling her "you work for me you come when I call you" pretty sure I had stepped back a couple decades. Regardless we returned after an hour or two to our room. The carpet was dusty and dirty the toilet had blood or something else on the front of the bowl the tub was mildewed at the ports, the shower head barely worked because of limescale build up I had to wash my hair in the tub faucet because It had no pressure at all. The overwhelming use of heavy scented air fresheners, obviously to cover the lack of cleanliness was so bad on my allergies I had to take benedryl. The bed was uncomfortable and the pillow was literally a flat hard piece of no support at all. Breakfast was quartered store bought muffins that was in the entry with a non chilled pitcher of OJ that you had to take back to your room in a Dixie cup. Needless to say I didn't eat there. I am sorry to write an all negative review but I cannot find anything good to say about this place.

Dirty and not kept up. Furniture was probably from when they opened years ago. A/c was in the bathroom. Towels were shedding and ceiling was pealing off. Owner/manager was rude.I did not ask for a handycap room but we had to take it or else go to a different place. Until they do a major overhaul don't step a foot in their oarking lot.

Beds were not comfortable, scent of roses in room was over whelming. Continental breakfast was orange juice served with 5 oz dixie cups and 2 different kind of muffins, chocolate chip and Poppy seed cut in quarters.

Room Tip: don't plan on breakfast its a snack instead

Very dated, in nead of a good clean and lots of maintenance. Noisy at night from the road behind and everytime someone in the building uses water, you get a rumbling sound. 'Breakfast included' is a warm glass of orange juice and a muffin, which you pick up from the unmanned office and take to your room. Far from ideal taking it up a flight of stairs on a very cheap paper plate in the california heat. Car parks empty though, mmm wounder why?
