We opted to stay at the Sundown Inn for a one night stay as we passed through on a leisure trip to the San Francisco area. We found it on Trip Advisor and we decided to give it a shot. I can say that we were very satisfied with the accommodations and the price. The rooms are spotlessly clean. The location is within walking distance of the embarcadero and is close to restaurants. You will not find a better value.
If you are traveling on a budget and want to stay on the Central Coast- this fits the bill quite nicely!
It is not located on the water but it is within walking distance of the Morro Bay waterfront with its restaurants,galleries,souvenir shops and the other direction a movie theater, antique and second shops,funky coffee shops and more!
The room had 2 double beds, very clean, refrigerator, microwave, real coffee cups not just styrofoam- coffee maker and clean compact bathroom-shower only- no tub.
Quiet the Friday and Saturday night we stayed there- lots of lighting in the room-flat screen tv and fairly comfortable beds.
If you want a clean, basic place to lay your head down and a hot shower without breaking your budget- stay here! Also LOVE that it is NO SMOKING and NO PETS
We picked this motel because rarely have I seen so few 1-3 star reviews for anyplace on trip advisor. And if you read these, they have more to do with the writer's expectations than the hotel itself. If you want a spa, or breakfast, or free newspaper -- for heaven's sake, don't come here and expect them. If you want a motor inn the way they used to be - a clean, comfortable, friendly place to stay - this is as good as it gets. The place is so clean that, had it had a bathtub, I might actually have used it. The basics were provided and in good working order, the bed was comfortable and firm. Pillows a bit flat and hard for my taste, but I didn't bother asking for another. The owners were extremely friendly and accommodating, and would likely have provided another if they could. The reviews I've read here are pretty accurate. If this is what you want, you'll be delighted with it! (Oh, and the price, off-season at least, can't be beaten.)
Very clean and neat at a great price. We paid $50 and were upgraded to a king since a queen was not available. The dried lavender potpourri and in-room coffeemaker were nice. The downtown shops are just a couple of blocks away. There was ample parking for our truck and trailer due to the off-season but I wouldn't count on that being so during the summer. We travel for business and had to stop in SLO; after reading the horror stories about budget lodging there, we decided to make the detour to Morro Bay. It was well worth it and we won't hesitate to stay here again.
If you are travelling in Morro Bay and want to stay in a classic "old school" California motel, then the Sundown Inn is where you want to be. This place is a vintage "mom and pop" run motel with a great location close to both downtown and the waterfront. Plenty of places to eat and shop close by. Walking distance to Morro Bay's nightlife and during the car show this place is booked solid, so seasonal travellers should plan accordingly.
This place screams Americana, right down to the "Magic Fingers" bed vibrators wich appear to be original and still work! But just because the place is vintage do not assume that it is run down or low quality. Through all my travels in California I have not run across a cleaner hotel than this.
The Lins make regular tasteful upgrades where they count. You will always have a well appointed room, though without many frills: A modern flat screen TV that will always work, a dependable wireless connection, a neat little fridge [perfect to keep that six pack nice and chilly!], a micro, a little coffee maker that works good and is always stocked with coffee and creamers. The showers are steaming hot and the rooms are real cosy with old wall heaters that are very well maintained, not those big noisy plastic monstrosities you get at many of the national chains.
When you stay at the Sundown Inn you are staying at a truly family owned and run operation. And they really do care about your comfort. This is what keeps people like me coming back here again and again.
Like the others have said, it's an olders tyle motel very simply laid out. The decore is out of date but it's absolutely spotless and has a fridge, microwave and tv. It also has one of those 25c bed massagers - haven't seen one of those before!
The lady at the front desk was very polite and helpful and it's a 5 minute walk to the waters edge.
When looking at value for money I don't know if it can be beat. I hadn't been to Morro Bay before and it was great for an overnight stop and much better value for money than much of the accomodation in nearby San Luis Obispo.
