“Understanding the customer”
Reviewed 17 February 2012

We visited Napa 3 years ago and discovered the Carneros Inn. If we ever come back to this area we thought . . . Well, we returned and stayed for 3 luxurious nights. The quality of the resort and the helpfulness of the staff enhanced the experience. The privacy of our cottage near the vineyards, with a small garden and only the company of birds was unusual and very welcome. We cycled quite a few miles over two days and appreciated the skill of the spa staff as well. Very few hotels or airlines truly make the customer the center of their ethos. The Carneros Inn succeeds where so many others fail. We particularly appreciated seeing the head of operations serving coffee at breakfast, available to anyone who had queries or comments. Other establishments should take note.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Carneros Inn for a mini-moon. We had already traveled to the Maldives for our official, much longer honeymoon, but because we had to be in the Bay Area anyway for my husband's work, we decided to make a fun trip out of it.

When confirming our reservation, the reservationist on the phone from the Carneros Inn made a special notation that we were celebrating our recent marriage. Only because she had made our half-work/half-fun trip into a honeymoon trip, we anticipated something special from the Carneros. Mind you, this is our fourth trip to the Carneros, so as repeat guests, we expect the typical bottle of wine and cheese plate provided upon check-in. We were disappointed to find out that there were no special "perks" provided to honeymooning couples. We did receive a bottle of chardonnay and the cheese plate, as well as the general manager's note.

The Carneros was noticeably less full this time than our previous visits (all during summer/crush season). It seemed to us that all guests were localized around only a few clusters of cottages. We were able to get an extra hour before check out on our final morning; check out is normally at 12 noon. To receive late check out, call the front desk around 8am on the morning of your last day.

Boon Fly breakfasts and lunches were fantastic and consistently delicious, as always. Room service dinner took exactly the amount of time we were told (about 35-45 minutes). The quality of the food served through cottage dining is decidedly inferior to the hilltop dining room and Boon Fly, so we recommend going out for dinner unless you absolutely cannot make it out. I'm at a loss for words to describe the ribeye steak I ordered, and my husband's bolognese -- while tastier than mine -- was just okay. Friends who have also stayed at the Carneros have told me breakfast room service is the way to go if you want the baker's dozen donuts (perfection!) but want to lounge in your private patio.

We visited Plumpjack Winery for a tasting during this trip and were told our tastings would be free as part of our stay at the Carneros. We were also told tastings are free at Cade Winery for guests of the Carneros. The Plumpjack wines were surprising and delicious -- go!

This is still our go-to hotel in Napa. I'm sure we will indulge in many more visits to the Carneros in the long run, but I am curious about staying in Yountville, particularly Bardessono. The Carneros Inn is much more lively and comfortable in the warmer months, as expected, but it's luxurious and charming any time of year. One of our absolute favorites.

Room Tip: During the summer/early fall months when weather still cooperates with sun-lounging and pool time, a...

We stayed here in September and it was amazing. Luxurious, but in a country, cozy, charming kind of way. The rooms are very unique. They are clean, spacious, very appealing, and make you feel like you have your own little farm guest house. The bathrooms were huge. Decor is lovely. The grounds are breathtakingly beautiful and we rested by the pool one afternoon with a bottle of wine. Was awesome. The food at the hotel is great. We had breakfast at the one of the restaurants (I believe near or in that big red barn looking building) and we had cocktails and appetizers out by the firepit one night. The hotel is convenient to the wineries. We took a couple of day trips and had a driver take us to many boutique wineries nearby and it was a true pleasure to get to come back to the Carneros Inn and fall into that big white fluffy bed. If you want to do the California wine country and want to do it right, the Carneros inn is the perfect answer for you delivering first-class amenities with first-class country charm.

I have had a few very pleasurable weekends here. The rooms are very nice. It is certainly worth the extra for the larger rooms with a fireplace and outdoor bath. The garden areas are all very private and it is a great way to relax after a hard days wine tasting. The bathrooms are large and well equiped with two coffee machines (one espresso and one filter). The restaurants are both very good. I recomend taking one of the free bikes and cycling to the nearby Domaine Carneros (for Taittinger style champers) and with a little more effort up to Arteta winery. It will make your evening dip in the beautiful hilltop pool feel that much nicer. The concierge will book winery visits and suggest great schedules with barrel tastings and great meals. If you need a driver they will fix that for you too. Just enjoy.

Room Tip: Go for the rooms with a fireplace and an outside bath. Rooms with a view nice but all gardens are ve...

Stayed last June for a conference. Stayed in a fabulous two bed house. The rooms we re large, the fridge stocked with all the essentials you could need and the service was impeccable. My only complaint .. it is hard to find your way around after dark as it is not so well lit.
