Taquerias have been a part of my life since I was a kid. Growing up around Oakdale, they have come and gone over the years. I'm glad to see this new little shack shaking it up in town.
Located next to the 7-11 (on the west side of town) in a small house-like structure, Jarro Viejo has a surprisingly large dining area indoors and a quaint patio in the front. It's a great place for classic California style burritos – large flour tortillas stuffed with beans, rice, salsa and meat of your choice (I get the carne asada or carnitas, usually). Wrapped in foil, of course. Upgrade to the super burrito for guac and sour cream. They also give you chips and salsa.
Their little salsa bar has a roasted salsa that packs a punch. I love a delicious spicy salsa. I'll definitely be going back on the weekend to try their tacos al vapor.
- The parking lot is small, so I park around the corner on the street by 7-11.
- Avoid the high-school lunch rush during the weekdays when school is in session. The students can make local eateries very unenjoyable for dining.
