I stayed at the Z Hotel for three nights while attending a conference at the (sold out--thank goodness) Marriot City Centre. The Z Hotel is located right by Jack London Square (nice area with cool restos and waterfront), but is also nestled within a rough part of town (is it even considered rough to the locals? Not sure). The hotel--clearly once a motel--is clean, has comfy beds, wonderful staff, and great wifi. However, the area it is in really takes away from being able to enjoy the hotel.
Dodging drugged-out homeless people in the evening on your way back to the hotel--only to find them camped out in front of the hotel--is not good for business or for feeling safe as a tourist. Would I return (to Oakland or San Francisco)? Absolutely not. But that's not the hotel's fault.
To the management of the hotel: Thank you VERY much for being so incredible. I can tell the staff here are happy and really do their best. HOWEVER, I sincerely hope that you (and your colleagues within the San Fran/Oakland hotel industry) push your political leaders hard to get a grasp on the social problems that plague your respective cities. The sad state of affairs will no doubt catch up and start to impact tourism--and therefore your own businesses. Human feces, mentally ill folks and tent-cities are common themes just steps from the hotel. Good luck, friends.More
