We have stayed here many times both before the present owner, Robert, took over and now since he has had the place. Low key; dog friendly (only some rooms); beautiful situation across the street from Asilomar and a 5 minute walk to the ocean and the beach. Pacific Grove is a great low key town; endless good restaurants in PG and Monterey. Don't even have to think about Carmel and Carmel Valley but they're there if you want them.
The most restful vacation imaginable with the ocean close to hand.
The rooms are fine. Not fancy but the price is absolutely right. Owner is very hands-on; very friendly; very helpful.

Room Tip: Rooms are very similar; only difference is upstairs or ground level and 3 or 4 units have a living r...

The staff and location are the only redeeming qualities of this hotel. The rooms are clean, but incredibly dated and in need of repair. I was not expecting a four star resort, but for the price this place is unacceptable. Some of the light fixtures did not work. The couch and bed were uncomfortable and falling apart. The only heat came from a dangerous wall heater that had burnt the flooring. The only update to the bathroom in the last 20 years was the installation of institutional soap dispersers by the sink and in the shower. I don’t even want to begin talking about the state of the kitchenette.

The staff was great and always willing to help, but they could not make up for the awful rooms. I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone until they completely remodel the rooms or even better rip down the place and build a decent inn.

After searching forever for an affordable place to stay in Carmel for a family of 4 adults without re-mortgaging the house, we took a flyer on this property based on TripAdvisor ratings and comments. Would definitely stay there again.

Pros

Excellent location. 5 minute drive to Monterey, 10 minutes to Carmel, and a 5 minute walk through a state park conference facility to the beach.

Large, spacious, affordable. We had a one bedroom suite with a full kitchen and living room, bigger than our apartment in grad school. Seriously, maybe 900 square feet. And it was only $200/night at the height of the tourist season in August 2011. Kitchen was nicely furnished with pots and pans and such.

Friendly, interesting owner.

Contrary to some reviews, we liked the breakfast. Bakery scones, hard-boiled eggs, cereal, bagels, english muffins, donuts, muffins. Not bad for continental.

2 separated jaccuzzi's on a deck, with a Ducane stainless steel propane grill that we used to barbeque when we were tired of eating out. Owner provided BBQ tools on request.

Comfortable beds.

Laundry facility onsite (dryer was $0.75 for 45 minutes.)

Rustic, "in-the-woods" atmosphere.

Con

It's not a new property. The carpet could stand to be replaced.

We really enjoyed this place. It is old school, basically decorated, but clean, very comfortable, and we had a king with fireplace for a very reasonable price. Room price includes wine and cheese, and expanded continental breakfast. We were directly across from Asilomar Conference Center, and could walk through their property to the beach. The inn staff and owner were very accomodating and friendly. They suggested a restaurant down the street called Fish Wife and made us reservations. We thought the food was great.
The only negative I can give is that there are very few views at this inn. We looked out
on an ugly propped up fence and unplanted yard. There were a couple big trees in the yard, which were nice. At least it felt private.
We loved Pacific Grove and would gladly stay here again, away from the hustle and bustle of Monterey (the aquarium is only about 5-10 min. up the road) The price and friendly hominess were winners for us!

Located in the best area of beautiful Pacific Grove, this motel offers quite a bit for your lodging dollar. Lovely setting and location, wine & cheese in the afternoon, continental breakfast, popcorn popper in the room which the kids loved, two hot tubs, pleasant and helpful Kelley in the office. The room we were placed in was a queen/queen, average size, and was dated, but clean and serviceable. If I am being honest, in need of upgrading to a current modern standard, but you will pay $50-100 at the place next door, just for that and not much else. Certainly, Pacific Gardens Inn would be a place we would return to for a stay, when we visit again.

We loved the Pacific Gardens Inn. It has a rustic charm that made us feel welcome. Our second floor room was spacious and clean. There wasn't much of a view and the furnishings aren't luxurious, but it was all very comfortable and we slept well.

The wine and cheese in the afternoon was a highlight, and the hands-on owner provided all sorts of travel tips. Our son really liked the popcorn popper in the room too.

I also liked that a free computer with internet connection was provided in the lounge area. We used it to make reservations for a Hearst Castle tour (about a 2 1/2 hour drive away) and print out our plane boarding passes.

The next time we're in Pacific Grove again, we'd definitely stay at the Pacific Gardens Inn.

I can't say enough wonderful things about our stay at Pacific Gardens Inn. The owner, Robert, was constantly onsite, very personable, and catered to our every need. This man really wants his guests to enjoy their stay. We had the 2 bedroom suite which was perfect for our family of four with plenty of room. We lit the fireplace every night at our kids' request, and they loved the hot tubs on the property. The beds were comfortable, the rooms were clean, the housekeeping crew was wonderful, they even washed our dishes! Wine and cheese reception in the evenings was nice, and the continental breakfast was better than expected- cereals, bagels, muffins, and the most delicious scones! TIP: If you want a bigger breakfast, Aliotti's Victorian Corner is a must! Great location just a short walk to the beach. We visited the tide pools every morning before breakfast. Very quiet locale, just steps from the 17-Mile Drive (which quickly delivers you to Carmel and Pebble Beach). New trolley service picks you up next door to the Inn and gets you to several stops in town so you don't even need your car. We previously stayed at a B&B in town, but loved this location and personal service so much here that it's our new home in PG!! Thanks, Robert!

Room Tip: If their website doesn't show an available room, call the Inn and speak to Robert directly.
