“Great Campground”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 November 2011

We stay here during the summer months and our family loves it. The campsites are large and most open up to LARGE grassy areas where our kids can play without worrying about cars or traffic. No hookups, so that is a downside, but showers and bathrooms are kept very clean. Short walk over the dunes to the beach so location cant really be beat! We will continue to come here when visiting the coast.

Love this campground! Second time camping at North Beach. Enjoyed it even more this year. Very family friendly campground. Great place for kids to ride bikes and play in the open grass areas.
Easy beach access by a short walk over the dunes. You simply cannot beat this beach. The dunes are incredible. The beach is a wide expanse of white sand. Simply lovely.

I read the review that mentions theft. Bummer for them, but anyone who camps knows that if you don’t want something stolen, lock up it. It’s a simple reality of life no matter where you are. Camping is no exception. Is the campground rife with homeless drug addicts waiting to steal your utensils? No. Our site was right next to the eucalyptus grove and shrubs that they supposedly live in. Didn’t see a one. I did see a lot of retired couples going for walks and locals using the path that leads to the beach.
As for the Rangers not warning campers about the possibility of theft. There is a poster at the check in kiosk advising to lock up valuables.

Bathrooms are kept clean. Hot showers for $0.25. Rangers were very helpful and friendly.

Great place to stay while exploring the central coast. I know we'll camp here again and again and again.

We tent camped here for 4 days in August. We love the size of the campsites and the easy accessibility to Pismo Beach. Bathrooms are clean and well stocked and the showers are coin operated but maintained. Staff is friendly and offers things to do while you are staying in Pismo. They had a movie night while we were there. Love this place and will always come back! Make sure you make your reservation at least 6 months in advance for the summer months! Campground fills quickly. Will be back next year!

I will start with the positives:
Next to the campground is a eucalyptus groove that wintering Monarch Butterflies roost in from November – March. During this season, daily informational talks are given and monoculars on tripods are set up for viewing purposes. This is an amazing scene if you haven’t seen it before.

The Beach, that is right next to the campground, if covered with natural sand dunes that are topped with native ground cover. The sand next the break is flat and hard packed, which makes for great walking and running ground. BEAUTIFUL BEACH!

Negatives:
This is not a secure or secluded space. The entrance, during the day, gives the impression of a patrolled and responsible park but this is not true.

The campsites are extremely close to one another and I would describe the area as an URBAN setting. Anyone can walk through the campground including the large Homeless population (that live in surrounding bushes and stroll through the campground during the day scoping out items) and the Methamphetamine Addicts (a Ranger informed us of this). Keep your stuff close and you children closer.

The first morning of our visit (stayed 3 nights), we woke to find our cooler (drinks and food) and our utensil bin to have be stolen. Campers are never informed of this problem until they are filing a report with the police/ranger or if you talk with anyone why has stayed there before. THEFT is a common occurrence at this campground.

My wife, daughter, son-in-law and grandson stayed here for four days, three nights, Dec 28-31. The campground came highly recommended and lived up to all. From Dec 2 till Jan 1 it is on a first come first serve location. We came in Monday night just after dark, wrote down the available campsites and went searching. Found a great site and set up camp. Since it was only the wife and I for this night, we headed to Guiseppe's for a fine Italian dinner. Tuesday was a walk on the wide beach with walkers, joggers, bicycle riders, dogs, families, etc., perfect. We walked South to where they allow vehicles on the beach and then took the elevated boardwalk thru the dunes back to camp. Gorgeous. When the daughter and grandson arrived, we walked, yes walked, to the Monarch butterflies. Amazing. That night a gentle rain, the next day biking thru Pismo out to Dinosaur Park in Shell Beach with the grandson in a bike trailer. Fun, fun, fun. Once the dad arrived after work, we all took a moonlite walk on the beach. Unforgettable. More walking Thursday and then heading home. We'll be back. Each neighbor about 50 feet away with trees between. After 10:00, quiet time, the only noise we heard was from parties at the nearby Pismo Beach RV Park. We'll be back again and again. It's dry camping, but wood and ice is brought around daily, pump-outs are available, restrooms and showers cleaned daily. One of our best camping experiences ever, and we've camped alot. By the way, we were in a 19 foot trailer.

We were unable to even GET a campsite. The North Beach Campground is First Come First Served, and what a mess. I was told by the Oceano Campground via telephone that we had to go to the campsite, find an empty spot, set up our tent and pay. I asked Specifically if we could put out a reserved sign and pay for it. No, you have to set up camp.
We went there at noon Sunday to get the site, and everyone was putting up boxes and paper plates to reserve the space, no one was putting up any of their camping items, just a chair or a box. We went to the ranger station to let them know, and the Aide was rude as anyone I have ever encountered.
My question becomes this. Do you have to get there at 10 a.m. and ask who's leaving, and then hang around their campsite all morning like a vulture in order to get a campsite? in which case, when is it cleaned? I was told that check out was at noon, and check in at 2:00, I can't imagine putting even camping gear down before it's cleaned up from the previous campers. ish.
So, I don't believe we'll be camping until the spots are reservation only; or until we figure out the system... which seems to change from day to day. I don't believe it's so difficult to go play in the dirt for a few days. Sigh.
