This is food that you won't find in your average westernized-americanized asian restaurant.

The owner is from Chong Qing, the big city of Sichuan Province. He's brought recipes from there and around that area.

Spicy pepper lovers will be in heaven, but they have plenty of non-spicy dishes as well.

The menu has been recently updated to include some excellent dishes from their other restaurant in Pleasanton. I've taken many clients there, and always had excellent food.

Now, this restaurant is mostly ho-hum. They have dumbed down the food and the chef is not paying attention to serving great food. This week's Sichuan Spicy Crispy Beef was all crisp and no beef. It was over-fried and there was nothing but crunch. If there had been beef, it was long gone during the long frying period.

Too bad, because this was the go-to Sichuan restaurant in the area. Better to go to Countrywood in Walnut Creek for now. Unless you are near El Cerrito, in which case go to Sichuan Fusion. (And yes, SICHUAN is the correct Chinese Anglicized spelling; Szechuan is typically used in Taiwan.)

I've come here numerous times for the Sichuan style food. Yes, it really is good authentic Sichuan tastes and flavors. They recently added a new menu (most likely due to the new cook/chef) which is definitely worth a try!

Having spent some time in China (over 2 years), I was pleasantly surprised to see the Xinjiang Chicken Over Noodles (Xinjinag da pan ji 新疆大盘鸡). If you're into spicy, this is it. It's a fairly large dish consisting of potatoes, chicken with bone-in, and hand cut noodles. Hand cut noodles are really nice if you've never had it before. Be forewarned though, eating chicken with bone-in is only for the adventurous as this can be a challenge if you're not used to it.

The sweet and sour pork on the Chef's Special menu is also a nice treat too. It's served thinly sliced in big pieces and lightly battered. It's served crispy with the sauce and didn't come out soggy.

The dumplings (shui jiao 水饺) are really nice too! You can get lamb, pork, or shrimp. It's served as an appetizer but in China it's also served as a main since there are places you can get large orders of it too. However, not bad at all for finding this in an American suburban place!

The other dishes are also worth a try if you want something more familiar.

We heard an excellent review of this wonderful restaurant on KQED's "Check Please Bay Area." We've gone there perhaps three times in the past two years, and have found the service to be courteous and efficient, the ambiance family friendly, and the food excellent with a great variety of choices. Sichuan cuisine is known for its heat, however that can be modified by simply asking. We've selected both spicy with lots of character, and mild, also with wonderful flavors. For what we've ordered, and our high expectations, we've been happy each time we've had dinner at Sichuan Fortune House.
