We have stayed at the Hotel Mac in Point Richmond before and had always liked it. Our last visit in June, 2011, met all our expectations. We stayed in the Highcliff Room for 4 days while visiting our daughter and our first grandaughter. The room is beautifully appointed and meticulously clean. It was not large but we mostly slept there so it was more than adequate. The bathroom was large and clean. Everything was so well kept that it looked like it had just been remodelled.
Street parking is limited but the hotel provides parking in a locked lot for the guests.
The "complimentary continental breakfast" is provided as a $5 coupon per person per day for breakfast at Little Louie's Cafe just across the street, which is owned and run by the same local family which owns the Hotel Mac. The fresh bakery and fruit were plenty for me. My husband usually went with a heartier breakfast and everything he tried was great. The Cafe is cute and the staff was attentive. I have heard service may be slow on busy dyas but we did not experience this. The bran muffins and fresh orange juice are to-die-for.
Point Richmond is a neat neighborhood with a small town feel. There are 14 restaurants in the few blocks of "downtown." We did not have time to explore all the interesting shops - playing with our grandbaby was our primary occupation.
The only down side to the Hotel Mac was the noise from the restaurant dumpster. We had our window open for fresh air and even though we were on the third floor, the noise from the restaurant throwing glass bottles into the dumpster several times late in the evening was quite annoying. Then, about 5 AM one morning, there were dumpster divers digging through the trash to get the recyclables. Another morning, the trash truck came at 4:30 AM. I'm not sure how they could reduce this noise - maybe request that the restaurant hold throwing out the glass until when they open the next day and ask the trash truck to come later.
We are going in August and this time we will stay in a suite in the Annex. This is a newer building down the street, adjacent to the parking lot. We have been warned that the noise form the trains switching on the nearby tracks may be louder in the Annex but I'm sure it won't be as bad as the glass bottles breaking in the dumpster.
