Owner description: Grgich Hills Estate is an iconic Napa Valley winery, consistently producing world-class wines. Vintner Hall of Fame inductee Miljenko "Mike" Grgich first earned world-wide recognition when the Chardonnay he crafted won the 1976 Paris Tasting, beating the best of France. Mike then partnered with Austin Hills to open their family-owned-and-operated winery in 1977. Committed to natural winegrowing and sustainability, we farm our five estate vineyards without artificial fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides, rely on wild yeast fermentation and use our passion and art to handcraft food-friendly, balanced and elegant wines.

You have to make Grgich Hills one of your stops in the Wine Country. We visited with family, the four of us were celebrating special anniversaries, and our experience at Grgich added great memories. We had a private tasting in the cellar room - it was phenomenal. Linda, our your guide, knows her business. She had great attention to detail. We learned not only about the history of Grgich, but also details regarding the fine quality of the wines. Known especially for their white wine - the Cabs are to die for, you must try them. Linda was so good, when she invited us back at the end of the week for a barrel tasting - the four of us returned & were glad we did.

Thank you so much, Linda. We will be back!

The day we visited they were 'Stomping Grapes'....a riotous time! Take off your shoes and socks and jump into a vat of grapes and go at it. Pictures taken with your camera by the host and when you step out of the vat you are stepping onto a white T-shirt (that you purchase). Those grape-stained feet provide a lasting 'impression' of the moment! Those before you offer comic relief while you are waiting, and then it's your turn to put on a show.

We dropped in at Grgich Winery because I had read that Mike Grgich made the 1973 Chardonnay that won the "Judgement of Paris" (Bottle Shock Movie, though different from the book). We had a 2-for-1 tasting coupon and also got to keep the Grgich Winery glasses which were pretty nice!

Imagine how excited I was to find Mike (88 years old) was there! There are displays about the competition and Mike signed a bottle of Chardonnay for me to bring home. He was also very willing to appear in pictures.

The wine was great, staff was enthusiastic and we really enjoyed our visit to this winery (no appointment required).

There are dozens of wineries and tasting rooms along the length of Napa and Sonoma Valleys, all wonderful in their own right; however, Grgich Hills is a cut above.

Croatian-born Mike Grgich's world-class Chardonnay was featured in the movie "Bottle Shock" about California wines beating out the best of France in 1976, and their quality today is top notch. World leaders have served Grgich wines at state dinners.

Besides the gardens and property being a beautiful spot to enjoy, the staff Of Grgich Hills Estate is pleasant and helpful, the tasting experience relaxed, and the rich history of Mike Grgich and his family's pride in their product is evident everywhere on the estate. Be sure to include this small winery in your plans.

( Actually, grown family, but that wasn't one of the choices)
The San Francisco Chronicle had an article that touted Grgich - “The tasting room staff displays a winning mixture of professionalism, enthusiasm, and friendliness.” -- all true. We were escorted by Michelle Mitchell, and had a top notch experience. Grgich is a top line wine, with a top notch way of dealing with their guests. Their web site lists a bunch of different types of tastings - we didn't have enough time for one of the biggies, and I regret it.
