Take the time to view the park, read the name plates of the trees and shrubs, go to the rose garden, the Vietnam Memorial, sit on a bench, eat a box lunch...
When I was seven, 1962, my grandmother took me and my 17 yr. old sister through this park to a movie theatre (no longer there) on the K st. Mall. Squirrels in the park...I remember clearly. Provide your kids these memories.

Capitol Park was established around the Capitol Building, and includes a wonderful rose garden and many trees not native to the area that are labeled with markers. There are also war memorials dedicated to those from California who died in our too many wars. Take at least an hour and walk around the park.

Lousy parking, traffic around the area but worth a stop. Take a stroll around the park. Enter from the south entrance and take in the old offices, the furniture, historic pictures, the lovely marble and overall architecture. Peek up the rotunda at beautiful artwork. Take the elevator ride to the basement for the cafeteria experience. If its mid-week, you may even catch a public event scheduled usually on the west steps.
