Visited this museum on a weekday in March. The museum is basically in a small schoolhouse sized building with lots of Robert Louis Stevenson items. The curator was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the author. Though the museum is free, there is a donation box on the front desk. Worth a 1/2 to an hour visit. You can pop over to the quaint public library next door which has a very nice children's area and sells cheap used books.

Kidnapped in Saint Helena, there must be a treasure nearby. I grew up dreaming of the south seas and the carribean reading his novels. Long John Silver was a buddy. Visiting here brought the stories and Robert Louis Stevenson to life.

This small museum is delightful with it's well informed and friendly curator. A hidden visitor's gem in Sta. Elena.

I didn't know much about RLS before our trip to Napa. In less than an hour at this museum, you will know and appreciate this author's life story. The docent was informative and pleasant; knowledgeable without boring you. Looking around without her explanations would not have been that interesting. Also, on the museum website are places RLS visited during his honeymoon in Calistoga. We visited several of them which were great breaks from wine tasting.

When one reaches a time in life where history and travel holds a deeper meaning, it's deeply satisfying to encounter a museum like the Stevenson. Honestly, I hadn't read Stevenson's works until after my visit (Hey, put down those stones), but if you've been to Scotland or the South Seas, or have an interest in adventurers like the novelist, you'll find the museum (and tour) most satisfying. (Yes, I said that already).

I haven't read the other reviews, but I've a feeling they've covered it all.

All I would add is Presley, the guide, was excellent. She's obviously a huge Stevenson aficionado, and her knowledge of his life & works -- most evident. She handled the waves of new arrivals with a calmness, incorporating them into the existing tour.

The Museum published Silverado Squatters ($12). The artwork is nice, and it helps to support the museum. Free admittance, though worthy of a donation.
