Take Highland Drive off Patricia Drive and follow it to curbside parking at the culdesac. You'll already be a third of the way up so great vistas will be available to the east and south shortly after you begin your hike. You don't need to go to the top to get a nice overlook of CalPoly, Laguna Lake, and Los Osos Valley. Trees will provide shade during the beginning of the hike, but you'll be on open trail as the path winds around the south side of the peak. After that the only shade will be whatever you can find under rock outcroppings. I consider this a moderate climb, taking about an hour and a half to 2 hours to reach the top, allowing time for frequent rest stops. Once you get to the west side of the hill, a series of switchbacks take you to the top. A couple of memorial benches mark the end of the trail, but the more ambitious amoung us will scramble to the top of the boulders for a more comprehensive view, including Morro Bay. It took me about 45 minutes to get back to the car.
