My friends and I discovered this GEM of a place when we were visiting for a friend's wedding. We felt like we were transported back in time to Victorian Era England and situated in the most convenient spot downtown. A block away from coffeeshops, bars, restaurants and even Acai bowl places! Rooms were super comfortable and each one had a city-centered theme! The staff was very knowledgeable and made us feel like we were staying with friends-- it was also great to stroll down in our pajamas for coffee and a delicious breakfast in the mornings...Such a special way to experience this city!!!

Thank you so much for the wonderful review. We are so glad you enjoyed the atmosphere of the Garden Street Inn as well as being so close to the downtown area of San Luis Obispo. We do hope you will come back and see us!

This is our 2nd time at the Inn. We like it for its rustic charm and location. Don't expect the trappings of a hotel, like 24 hour reception, staff running around ready to wait on you. It is an old house and what you have is a house manager who will help if they can.

Our room was a nice size, it had a TV and aircon and it was clean. One small point was the headboard for the bed was too high and the pillow disappeared down behind it. Parking was in the bank next door as long as you have a card, provided by the hotel, in the window.

The convenience of the hotel to the town makes it and ideal place for a short visit to San Luis Obispo.

Stop of a San Luis Obispo for one night while travelling from San Francisco to LA by train. This place is well located for the traveller who does not have a car. It is only a very short walk to main shopping area and eating places.
Staff were friendly and very helpful. When my cellphone failed after arriving staff were very helpful in organising an early morning taxi for the station at 7.00am. Because we were missing the breakfast that was included in the cost, staff provided a bag of fruit for the morning.
This Inn is what I would call Victorian decorated, very clean, great bed.
There is only one draw back for the traveller with a large heavy suitcase and that is stairs. Most of the rooms are upstairs.
When in town for dinner Thursday night we found a very large farmers market in progress. I understand this market is held every Thursday.
Would recommend this accommodation.
For the traveller who does not have a car, load the Uber app onto your cellphone, from what I saw most of the Taxis in San Luis Obispo are Uber. We used my iPhone to get one from the Station, cost just under Six dollars.

Pet/dog friendly? Not really. Website mentions dogs OK in select rooms. When we arrived with our 13 lb. non-shedding dog we learned that there is only one room that pets are allowed in. Not exactly what we'd call dog friendly. We decided to not stay and continue on our journey. With that said, person at the Inn was very friendly, accommodating and understanding/supportive of our decision to not stay.

We arrived at the Inn after the innkeepers had left for the night, this was not a problem though as we had been given excellent instructions as to how to access the house and our room. Due to an Amtrak breakdown it was 1am when we arrived, the plate with delicious cakes on the table in the room, was very gratefully received. We stayed for 3 nights and breakfast each day was something different, it was wonderful. The room we had was on the 1st floor, the inn is accessed by a flight of stairs from street level. Our room was spacious and beautifully presented. As it was next to the entrance, lounge and breakfast area there was a little noise from the area at breakfast time. This would not put us off from staying there again.
The location was perfect for strolling around the town and investigating the area. Highway 1 was easily reached and we went to see the Elehpant seals (in the pouring rain) and Hirst Castle, which was closed due to the rain, they did refund our pre bought tickets.
Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, they were extremely friendly and helpful.
