“Like everything but the price!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 April 2012

Stayed at Madonna Inn again for a couple nights in January.

Of the 3 rooms we have stayed in, the Old World Suite is the best of the 3 (see previous review!)

Hideaway Room- 3 star
$219 a night
Has a rock shower but no waterfall.
The room is very dark... not much lighting.
It backs up to the parking lot so you pretty much have to keep the blinds closed most of the time.
Didn't really like the bathroom set up at all in this room.
The shower door is behind the bathroom door so it is kinda weird.
The shower is made of huge rocks and is NOT good for tall people.
If you are tall, you have to be careful to keep your head bent down the entire time to avoid banging it into the huge boulder rock that is sticking our directly above the shower!
Not a good shower for tall people!!

The bathroom also has one of those heated toilet seats with the water that will spray on your backside to clean you off and then an air dryer to dry you off.
It was interesting .......probably cool to have at home but in a hotel or a place with many people using it......... well that grossed me out!!!

Vintage Room- 3 stars
got a deal at $179 a night.

"Vintage" as in Wine, not as in retro!
This room seems to be one of the older, more standard type (and cheaper) rooms.
This one was decorated in wine type colors and had all tile floor.. .no carpet.
Also it had a back patio with nice fireplace which was cool....... only down side is that it is not private!

All 3 rooms I have stayed at here have been spotlessly clean!

If you are looking for a really 'fun' room... definitely get one with a rock shower and waterfall....... I recommend the Old World Suite.

We took this trip a couple of years ago; i took my 2 sons. The room was PURPLE(ok, lavender) and seemed OLD. I might call it quirky. It was just OK but seemed pricey.
We only stayed one night then drove to San Francisco where we stayed @ the OMNI for only ~$40 more ( a great deal from travelocity!). Madonna Inn couldn't possibly compare favorably to the OMNI. I would avoid Madonna Inn as old, tacky & overpriced. Try a nice bed & breakfast or a bigger chain suite-hotel (La Quinta is nice).

The Madonna Inn is a quirky and fun hotel that has seen better days. Each room has an unusual theme, and I can imagine that it is worth visiting on a lark, but in my opinion it was just too expensive for the level of quality the accomodation offered.

We stayed in The Fox & Hound Room, which was rather gloomy, damp and cold. If their aim was to recreate the feeling of staying in an old pub somewhere on the countryside in England before central heating was invented, then they were successful. (Granted, it actually was a cold and rainy day in March in southern California.)

Naturally the room did have heating, which blew hot, dusty air out of a vent in the ceiling. The gas fireplace also made strange moaning noises, yet provided little warmth.

The whole place just gave the impression of desperately needing an overhaul, which is OK, but not at $300 a night, sorry, or $14 for a glass of wine at the bar. We didn't even bother trying the restaurant for fear of the prices. Instead, we went to iHop next door.

And on top of all that, it is directly on the freeway.

I think it is definitely a fun place to visit, if only the prices were a little more realistic.

I imagine reviews for this place could be all over the place depending on what specific room you happened to get. You can request special rooms but they're not always guaranteed. The rock rooms seem to be the most popular, since they're built into a real hunk of rock and are the kitchiest.

Anyhow, I had a wonderful 1-night stay with my sweetie here, and it was a blast. We got the "Just Heaven" room with a cupid-ish theme on a top floor with stairs that led up to a little lookout tower. The room was large with lots of couches and chairs and peacock blue magnificence. It was a bit of a walk to the pool, but the pool at night was well worth the mini trek. The water comes right up to the rim and one end has a gradual slope that lets you ease your way right down into it.

The decor at the all-pink steakhouse was, like most of the Madonna Inn, fantastically over-the-top. The service and food were just fine.

I can't wait to return.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a nice review. We are thrilled that you and your ‘sweetie’ were able to experience all that we have to offer here at The Madonna Inn. Just Heaven is just that; heavenly. Or pool area is our newest addition opening in 2008 and we are thrilled that you were able to enjoy it. Thank you again, and we do hope to see you and your ‘sweetie’ again soon.

My husband and I stayed here for his 30th birthday and we had a blast. This would have to be a splurge because the rooms aren't cheap and if you plan to eat there you will pay a pretty penny, but it is well worth it.
We got the caveman room and it was a very unique experience. It had a rock waterfall shower that was a fun way to get ready for your day, but since the whole bathroom is rock it doesn't dry out so well. The bed was comfy, the room was quiet, and felt very secluded. If you stay in this room watch for the sensor that flushes the urinal. It can be sensitive.
I would recommend taking your time to walk around and check out the intricate details they put into the decorating. It is fun!
The restaurants are great and have a good selection. We had a brunch with family at the Copper Cafe that was reasonably priced and delicious. I love their goblets!
We had a birthday dinner at Alex Madonna's Gold Rush Steakhouse and they went out of their way to make my husband feel special for his birthday. They had a live band playing that added to the dining experience nicely. If you have an aversion to pink or Pepto Bismal, you may want to choose another restaurant because it is ALL pink.
The whole hotel is very over the top, but that is what makes it a fun and different experience.

Room Tip: Plan in advance to get the room you really want.

First off we would like to wish your husband a belated “Happy Birthday” from all at the Madonna Inn. The Caveman room is by far the most popular, and were are ecstatic that your were able to experience its primitive whimsy. Both the Café and Steakhouse are indeed and experience to indulge in and we couldn’t be happier that you were able to enjoy both. Thank you for leaving your comments, and we hope to see you in the future.

This was our 3rd stay at the Inn over 32 years. We stayed in the Kona Cave room, a rock room with a rock shower. Fun but dark. It is showing its age, the light dimmers did not function. Older folks may find the floor of the rock bathroom difficult to walk on due to the unevenness, but it is unique. The restaurants, however, are very good to excellent. we had the filet mignon and it lived up to its expectations. The oak wood smokey flavor was very good although a steady diet of it would get old. Breakfast in the coffee shop was good; well executed but food was not out of the ordinary. Service in both restaurants was superb. Very professional and attentive waitstaff in both places. The hotel is worth a visit once for its unique style.

Room Tip: Every room is different. They are listed on the website with features. Ground floor rooms require...

We selected the Madonna Inn as the place to stay at, to break up our auto trip from the Bay Area down to the Los Angeles area. Though we had stopped at the hotel a few times in the past to "visit" the fabled public men's bathroom, we had never stayed overnight. The hotel has the unique characteristic of each room having a one-of-a-kind style. Its web site was easy to use, and one great feature is the ability to see what each room looked like. We reserved a room, but after arriving, changed to the Pioneer America room. This room had a large map behind the headboard of the bed, showing some national features and individuals involved in the development of the USA. It was quite large, with a sofa and loveseat in addition to typical room furnishings. Yet it wasn't crowded because the room was very large. A nice feature was two fold-away luggage stands, bathrobes, and a large bathroom with stone floor. We strolled through the property, saw the ornate white circular outdoor stairs and balcony of a nearby building (ours had only one floor). A walk through the main building with its thick rug, seeing the various eating and shop areas, and ornate carved woodwork and doors, was enjoyable. We also walked up the hill to the pool and exercise room area. Landscapiing was a notable feature. Almost made me think I'm in a botanical garden, what with the numerous, well-tended, plants and flowers. The inn is a landmark in the San Luis Obispo area. We ate in the coffee shop. One notable feature there is that each table has a copper surface. Actual copper, I think. Go and enjoy!

Room Tip: We were told that its historical status has prevented the hotel from getting approval to add an elev...
