So Din Tai Fung Santa Clara doesn't take reservation anymore, first come first serve. On a Saturday we came at around 10:30 (they opened at 10) and the place was full with a line. We weren't picky about where we are sitting so they had a handicap space by the bar - serving the same food - so why not :)
Anyway we ordered the house chicken soup, the sticky rice, xlb pork and xlb crab, wonton in spicy sauce, pork and shrimp shao mai, and potstickers -- and everything was delicious. Service was speedy, each dish came out one at a time so we were able to finish them while they were hot. The seasoning was great, don't over soy sauce the dipping ginger sauce, you want to be able to taste the broth inside the dumpling. No skin was broken so all of my dumplings still had their juices inside - great craftsmanship and top quality.
I took only 2 pics as the rest others had done, these two were just too pretty not to do it. Enjoy!

One has to order several items to make a complete meal, but the dumplings are all interesting and tasty. We had expected to wait in a long line but fortunately we were seated right away. For those who prefer their food Asian spicy, there are sauces to add flavor. We enjoyed dinner very much!

DTF - as it is popularly known is always full and there is a wait time especially as it is tge first one in the Bay area. But after having great dimsums in Seattle this branch in Santa Clara is not on par. There is some flavour missing here. The all time favourite dimsums - pork and shrimp dumplings in spicy sauce are very good but the dumplings with soup in them are not as good. The noodles were also average but the red bean dumplings were as good as ever. All in all if one has not tasted better this would be excellent especially as the service is great.

Its our second time, the dumplings were still very good and we like the pork dumplings the best. It was inside the shopping mall which open from 10 am but the restaurant only opens from 11 am. There was a long line up by 10:30 a.m. We got our table as we did wait for a good 45 min before it open. The spare ribs and beef noodle soup and pork chop fry rice were very good too. It is slightly pricy but with the premium location inside the Westfield mall it was understandable.

We had a local restaurant that did a version of Xiao Long Bao (XLB), but they closed, so we have been looking for a new place to try. This location is a bit of a drive for us, so took some planning to get here. We had heard the lines were long, and no reservations accepted, so planned to go for lunch around 11L30. We arrived, checked in and left our cell number for a text message when they were ready for us to return. We waited about 25 minutes for the text, then waited another 15 minutes or so 'inside' until a table was ready. This is a fairly large place, but it fills up fast when they open at 11.
They give you a check list for you to order the number of each dish that you want. We had a brief discussion with our server, then started to fill it out - he had suggested that for 3 of us we should order 6 dishes, which we did. Proved to be a bit much, but gave us something for lunch the next day.
We were pleased with the pork XLB, but only 6 in an order (and seemed to be the case for all of the dumplings we ordered), so you might need more than one order if you have a larger group. We tried a number of items that were not familiar to us, with mixed results. We were not thrilled with the Pork Chop Fried Rice (rice - white - was great, pork chop just appeared to be pressed meat). The sautéed string beans were delicious, nice and crispy with great flavor. Of the two other dumplings we tried we came to the conclusion that those with a single filling, ie. chicken, were quite tasty, but those with a combination of fillings, like Shrimp & Pork dumplings, seemed to lose their identity. My wife really liked the shrimp & Pork spicy wonton, but I was not as pleased.
We will go back when next in Santa Clara - probably for lunch and arrive around 11am when they open. Service was attentive, plenty of refills on our water, and they were more than happy to provide forks for those members of our party that preferred them to chop sticks.
As for pricing, most dishes are in the $9 to $11 range. Our lunch (for 3) was a bit over $60 before tip.
