Santa Cruz Youth Hostel Carmelita Cottages

This hostel is in a great location to get to the ocean, surfing museum, and Boardwalk but the parking is a BEAST, especially on weekends or holidays when the area is packed. Although they say you can reserve a parking pass, if the area has no openings, you are out of luck. The area parking lots don't allow overnight parking either. I ended up having to pay a motel a couple of blocks away to allow me to use their parking lot!
They are very strict about the times they are open because of an agreement with the neighbors. However, it is a nice little place with knowledgeable and friendly staff and definitely the cheapest place in the area to stay!

The kitchen area was quite clean and the cottages very pretty. Bathrooms were immaculate . Staff were generally quite friendly and accomodating (when they were there, reception only open at certain hours so check this before you arrive!!)

Our room was really cramped - I didnt mind so much, but we had 7 beds crammed into a room. My friend got bed bug bites - we only stayed 2 nights and they became quite irritated just after we left. In our room we had 2 elderly ladies, which I have no objection of, but felt a little like i was in a retirement home whilst in our room, making sure we were super quiet, etc.

Location was pretty good, close to the beach and the fair, weather was lovely while we were there.

HOWEVER... this was the biggest downfall - there is a 10pm lockout, which meant that going out to a pub/bar we couldnt stay out for long. Most pubs dont get busy until after 10pm, so ended up at a Gay bar for salsa dancing night (which WAS a lot of fun but the curfew sucked, especially if you just wanted to go down to the boadwalk fair at night)

It was the only hostel we could find in Santa Cruz, so didnt have any alternative options. If we had, we probably would have considered staying elsewhere.

The Santa Cruz Hostel is located at the Carmelita Cottages atop Beach Hill at 321 Main St. It's two blocks from the sandy Main Beach (and Wharf and the Boardwalk Amusement Park) and close to downtown. Bus #7 stops nearby. The Hostel features dormitory style accommodations, but also has a couple of family rooms. Affinity groups of up to twenty can be accommodated, but need reservations. During the busy summer the 40-bed hostel is nearly always full and reservations are recommended. The Hostel opens at 5PM, curfew is 11PM and everyone leaves by 10AM. The Hostel is closed during the day. There is a free self-help kitchen, common rooms, and plenty of bathrooms. Linen is provided (sleeping bags are not allowed). The overnight fee is $18 for members, $3 more for those without a valid Hostel card. For under 18 it's less. Picture ID is required. There is a max. 3 night limit to stay. Hostels are not hotels or motels and courtesy and civility are part of the Hostel tradition. Phone number is 831-423-8304. Other nearby hostels are Monterey, Saratoga, Pigeon Pt. lighthouse and Montara lighthouse.
