Back in town for the day, I caught up with some friends and enjoyed a satisfying lunch with the high point being the bakery.
Stella Barra can be pretty hectic on a weekend evening; around lunch time on a Saturday, four of us easily found a table. A steady stream of people followed. There must have been problems in the kitchen as our order took nearly 30 minutes. Apologizing for the inconvenience, the manager brought us a complimentary pizza as we waited though not one from our order...maybe from someone who walked out? It was spinach on a white topping; interesting but salty and who puts spinach on pizza?
My friend enjoyed his gluten-free pizza with truffles while my margherita had a great crust with an unseasoned tomato-ey topping. It was good, but no better.
The bakery has some big winners starting with a monstrous chocolate chunk (not chip) cookied. The cookie part has a great crunch, flavor and sweetness and serves as a vehicle for large chunks of chocolate. The chocolate walnut cookie, even more monstrous, was good and certainly looks impressive, but takes second place compared to the chocolate chunk cookie.
Overall, the experience as satisfying, especially the bakery. Given the strength of the crust, I'd come back to explore other pizza toppings.
