“Clean, Great Location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 April 2012

Location to Santa Monica Pier and Shopping was great.
Location to the walkway on the beach was excellant!
Our room had a partial view of the beach, but the rooms with a balcony had a poorer beach view, so I was happy that we had the better beach view even though it was a partial view only.
Our window did not open, but I liked having the better view than our friends with the balcony.
The rooms did have a safe, much appreciated.
The bedding was new
The vehicle valet service was fast, and I liked the complimentary water they put in the car.
The gym was small but had all the equipment we needed.
Many restaurants within a short walk.
The conceige gave us great tips and suggestions.
I would stay at the hotel again.

Thank you for choosing our property for your vacation. We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay and hope you will choose us again in the future. I am sorry that we couldn't give you a room where the windows open. Unfortunately on the higher floors it is a safety issue. Thank you for mentioning a few of our amenities and we are glad you found them to your satisfaction. You mentioned the Concierge, and Valet, was there anyone in particular you interacted with as we would like to acknowledge their hard work and dedication. We look forward to having you again soon.

I recently stayed here on business and was pleasantly surprised. Great location near the Santa Monica Pier. Good service and reasonably close to LAX - about fifteen minutes with no traffic.

I recently spent a week at Le Merigot on business and have stayed at the hotel five or six times in the past five years or so. Here are some pros:
- great location: just a half block up from the beach and running/biking paths (you can go a very long way on those paths and if you're going later in the day, head north and the sun will be setting in front of you - stunning!)
- wonderful staff: truly some of the consistently nicest people I've encountered in a hotel
- big, comfy, really clean rooms and well designed bathrooms (if you can snag a room with a patio, do it!!!)
- great restaurant for breakfast (especially if you're at the Marriott gold level - they give you bkfst vouchers)
- the bar: what was an after-thought stuck in a corner is now pretty much the whole lobby and it has a nice energy; even better - go sit by the fire-pit, have a cocktail and catch a game outside
- work-out room: the weight room is pretty well equipped, albeit cramped, the treadmill area is terrible/claustrophobic
parking: they brought the car up fast every time and always offered a cold bottle of water; nice touch
Here are some cons:
- the rooms: need a refresh - the marble bathroom crack was completely cracked from front to bath, not a hairline, a big crack ... this is a JW Marriott and that simply shouldn't be tolerated ... the desk/chair combo is ridiculously unmatched, unless you like sitting and reaching up to your computer. It's just plain bad.
- tv channels: they used to have HBO, now they have zero premium channels. Again, JW Marriott?
- pay internet: seriously? the only good part of that is that you can buy it by the week and save $
- room service: as good as the restaurant was, room service was equally bad. I can't explain it, but everybody in our group had the same experience
Overall, I would advise people to stay here, but it's not in the top tier of JW Marriotts (i.e. the Camelback Inn Phoenix). It is a really great place for a home base that puts you just close enough to the center of Santa Monica, but not in the heart of the noisy district. It's an easy walk to great restaurants and shopping and entertainment. If you're a runner, walker or cycler, you'll love this place (btw - Palisades park on the bluff along the ocean is a great place to start or finish a long run on short, springy grass).
Enjoy!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a walk-out patio or at the very least a window that opens. Many of the rooms are...

Good afternoon,
Thank you so much for your feedback. We truly appreciate your positive comments regarding our friendly staff! We all love working here and I am glad it shows! We are also thrilled with the way our newly re-designed lobby bar functions. I apologize that some of the room features were not up to your standards. We will certainly look into this in order to better serve our guests.
Please feel free to contact us directly should you wish to share your room number so we can look into this.
Thank you again for staying with us and your loyalty to Marriott!
Yours in Hospitality,
Paul Hortobagyi, General Manager

Finished our la area spring break here.
2 nights- w Hollywood
3 nights Sheraton universal
3 nights here.
This hotel was overall nicest we visited this week. Intimate and lively feel. Super nice all around. Staff was awesome with kudos to Robert Garcia: guest services. Robert guided us to great activities in Malibu and tips all around. Had a passion to help, great asset.
My only complaint is Internet had costs. As Starwood gold, receive free internet( new for 2012)
As Marriott silver get nada. Marriott needs to quickly adjust this as it migrates me to prefer Starwood. Same goes with a bottle of water in the room. $6 is nuts for those that have " medaled" in elite status.

Stayed two nights over President's weekend. We had a one king suite with a very large wrap around balcony overlooking the Santa Monica Pier. The room itself was very clean. Bed and bedding top notch. Other reviewers state older property in need of renovation but I don't agree. The hotel had character and was not the cookie cutter Marriott.

All staff encountered were genuinely friendly and helpful. As far as ocean views/location; our room had excellent views. There is an older condo building across the street that prevents a panoramic view. It is otherwise situated across the street from the beach so not exactly beach front but close enough. We did not use the pool but dipped our feet in the water after a beach walk and the water was very warm.

I would say the hotel is used by business and pleasure guests equally and had the feel of equal ease of use for either type of stay.

Valet was very efficient and helpful with directions.

Other notes: The spa is free to use sauna... and valet always handed us ice cold waters when getting into the car. Free coffee and tea are offered at entrance to hotel resturant in the mornings.

There are pleanty of quiet sitting areas around little tucked away corners of the hotel. I would easily stay again if in the area. We slept very well, did not hear noise from other guests. We did hear noise from pier but it did not prevent a good nights sleep.

I have stayed at this hotel three times. Once during our honeymoon and twice since then. Recent overhaul to the lobby is impressive and up-scale. Location can't be beat; it is basically on the beach. Hot coffee always waiting for you in the morning (in the lobby, by the restaurant) is a nice, appreciated touch. If you can book it, nothing beats the VIP suite over-looking the pool!

Room Tip: Must have an ocean view!

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 February 2012

Gf and I spent a couple of nights here for valentines 2012. While this is a nice hotel, it is showing its age & no matter how you try to dress it up, it isn't up to the standards of a JW.

Positives:
- Very friendly & attentive staff
- Close to the beach, pier & 3rd st.

Negatives:
- Age of the hotel
- No ocean views (or really any views)
- Bathroom (see below)
- Tiny pool w/ little to no sun
- Way too soft (old?) mattress
- Sound proofing
- $35 +tip valet (typical for the area)

As noted above, the infrastructure of the hotel is old. While in our room, we could hear people in the hallways & doors slamming shut. We were awaken several times when people returned from a night out. There is also no central air (wall unit) & no exhaust fan in the bath (one of my pet peeves). Reminded me of a 2 or 3 star hotel, not a 4+ star JW.

We also had a maintenance issue. They were good enough to let us check in early (~12:30). My gf & I unpacked, then spent the day on 3rd St and the beach. When we returned & were ready to shower for dinner, we had very little COLD water (yes, cold not hot). The cold flow was so limited, we couldn't get much pressure to the shower head without scalding ourselves with extremely hot water. Since we were running late for our dinner reservations, we made do as best we could & informed the front desk of the issue on our way out. When we returned 4+ hours later & wanted to shower before bed, the problem hadn't been fixed. Apparently, maintenance checked the HOT water, found no issues, didn't bother to check out the full system (i.e. COLD water), & moved on. While I completely understand older buildings needing maintenance, I have little patience for a top level hotel not doing a simple check of the full room's system when a problem is reported. They did offer to move us to a new room, but we were ready for bed & just decided to ignore it for the night.

So, in summary, the location to 3rd St. & the beach are good & the staff is very friendly. However, I've personally stayed at similarly priced but much better (i.e. newer) hotels in the area.
