Don't be fooled by its unassuming dinning room (a bit dim and dated decor), as soon as the friendly staff greeted us at our table, I knew we were (total 6 of us) in a very good place. She was knowledgeable, vivacious and funny. She recommended 3 different wines for each of us to taste, base on our lively and enjoyable conversation about wine of the region - their unique characteristics and growers. And we were all happy with the selection!

The dinner menu has a good selection of vegetarian and house-made pasta dishes, fresh organic local produce, rustic in style yet refined in taste. Everything (steak, pastas, various vegetable dishes) we ordered were excellent, the stars of the dinner were: hot fragrant tomato soup (the best tomato soup I have ever tasted), Mary's chicken with with porcini and crimini mushrooms (the sauce was to die for), and local baby chanterelles (fresh and absolutely delicious). Last but not least, the cheese board! About 10 different kinds from local farms, all "explained" by a different but equally knowledgeable and friendly staff. The owner/chef was wonderful and passionate in his work.

I enjoyed the family/communal atmosphere, very warm and inviting, just made food and wine appreciation so much more fun. It was a great experience, felt like being transported to the good old times in a nice little Italian village! I will definitely return for more food and wine pleasures!

You just can't pull a handle on a slot machine and expect to win these days, but for us, we did just that. We drove along 116 looking for places to eat, and while we didn't stop at La Bodega the first time, we did our research and within two weeks had made our first visit, and within 30 days after that, have eaten there numerous times since.

Its quirky and different, and a step back in time in many ways. Chef Rick has some of the same history we do - San Francisco during the sixties, and we remember his father's Restaurant West Portal Joes. Rick's menu partially harkens back to his history of working with his dad in the kitchen, and his delightful pasta dishes bring us back to food we love.

When you walk in, you are greeted by the staff and asked whether you are there for the food or the wine. Then if you say food, they fill you in on what the experience will be. We end up picking up our silverware and napkins; water glasses, salt and pepper shakers; and we move to our seats near the window. We had been given a menu on which we circle our choices. After eating there frequently, we can recommend everything we have ordered. The salads and pasta are great, and the steak and chicken dishes are wonderful. For dessert so far we have only had the cookies, as we come mostly for lunch. And the big bonus is that Chef Rick uses local produce and changes menus regular to reflect that bounty.

The wine choices are elaborate, and that a whole different review. After a nice wine-interview with one of the staff members, we signed up for quarterly wine delivery and will trust them to pick out some great choices based upon our interview.

To sum it up - great food; consistent cooking; home-like atmosphere; and experts on hand to bring culinary and local viticulture to you. And we look forward to future dining, as Chef Rick offers many different types of dining pleasures - with wine pairing and dinners for special holidays during the year.

Great food, wine, and locals. Good selection and knowledgeable staff. I love the laid back serve yourself feel. Nothing uptight about this place. Want to talk to the chef? No problem. Best food we had in Sonoma. Reasonably priced big portions. We split a meal.

The food! The wine!! And did I mention the food? This place is unlike anywhere else you have ever been. Part wine club, part dining establishment, part friendly club, and part just a friendly place to hang out, this place is winderfully unique. The wine selection is unbelievable, and they will pour you just about any wine they have by the glass. And the food is hearty, local, top quality and expertly prepared. The pastas are excellent, and their chicken dinner is a special plate. If you are in the Senbastopol area, don't miss the best place to eat... and its not even a restaurant! Just go.

When you get there they will tell you there are 3 rules. One is that you don't use the word "restaurant" when referring to this place (even though it looks and acts like one).
I had heard it is a good place to celebrate birthdays and that was true. Our personable server did lots more than take our orders. She sat with us, chatted with us, and fulfilled her promise to find us a wine that pleased us. The friendly owner also joined us at our table. They weren't at all intrusive and were sensitive to giving us our personal space as well. Food and wine were both great. Cost depends on how much you order...the menu is on their website.
Try it out.
