“What a view!”

We spent just one night at Casa Rubio, but we wished that our itinerary had allowed us more time. We rented The Cabin which had giant windows that looked across the magnificent garden and on to the shore. The Cabin is very well equipped, with a full kitchen that includes dishes and cookware. The main room is a living room/ dining room/ bedroom, and there is a second small bedroom. The furniture is tasteful and comfortable, and everything is spotlessly clean. They offer a small breakfast (juice and a pastry) and you brew your own coffee. For dinner, there's a nice restaurant just a few minutes walk up the beach. The location is very convenient to the entrance to Redwood National Park. We had a great stay at Casa Rubio, and we hope to return some day.

Great view from the patio at "the studio". But, you know you are in trouble, when the owner shows you the toliet and says "hold the handle down and the plummer is on the way". And, the plummer never shows up.You know you are in trouble when your wife has to put on her shoes to use the bathroom.Dirty, worn out, uncomfortable furniture, to much deferred maintainence, a real shame! As a well known and respected restauranteur, Mr. Rubio knows better. The pics tell part of the story.

Another escape to Oregon and time spent at Casa Rubio! Such a gorgeous location and view of the surf, quiet & clean beach for walking, well-manicured landscape. Tony, we love to stay at your casa, either in The Cabin or The Studio. Glad you have reintroduced a small breakfast to the amenities. Hope to return again next summer. Pat & Kathe

We loved Casa Rubio. The view is unsurpassed if you stay in the main house. I did not see the view from the little cottage nearby. The garden is very well kept, and the place is very peaceful. My husband, son, and I stayed here for one night, but wish it could have been more. Our portion of the house was equipped with all of the kitchenware one might need, plus games and puzzles that my son loved. We loved the beach, and a person can walk right down to a nearby restaurant called the Nautical Inn, a wonderful seafood restaurant with panoramic views! We will be back. My son loved the owner Tony's little doggie. What I loved most was leaving the windows open all night and listening to the ocean all night. It made for a wonderful sleep.

Room Tip: either one in the main house

We recently spent a long weekend (4 days) at Casa Rubio. Tony was away from the property during our visit, but Suzanne (the caretaker) could not have been better. We stayed in the cabin, a bit separate from the main building. We had a direct view of ocean, though not as expansive as in the studio with its large deck. We found that the cabin was very comfortable, with lots of attention to detail. We arrived to find coffee packets, milk in the fridge, pieces of coffeecake for the morning. The bed was quite comfortable. The main bed is in the living area, with a gas stove sufficient to heat the entire cabin. There is a small kitchenette, with everything needed to cook meals.
The cabin has a separate bedroom, small but adequate for one person to occupy. There are three other rooms: the nest which was quite small and located below the deck, a second room on the lower level which we could not really see into, and the studio, , the largest of the three other rooms and a large deck and the best views of the beach and ocean. We were the only people staying over this weekend.
The property is about one mile south of the Oregon boarder. Oregon offers a town , immediately over the boarder, with a good pizza place and a good breakfast place down at the harbor. We ate half of our meals in the cabin.
Redwood National Forest is about an hour south of the property, a beautiful drive with a number of walks and hikes available once there. We could have spent another four days in the area, exploring and poking around, and never have lost interest.
Check access highways before traveling. Route 101 had a washout during our drive up from SanFrancisco, and vehicles had to find a detour. Our choice, route 162, added five hours to our trip including 30 miles of winding dirt road (the five hours covered about 90 miles)

Wonderful place to stay. Liz was very friendly & outgoing, along with Chica and Luna. Chica was a great beach comber & always eager to talk a walk with us. We picked this place (from an internet search) because the beach access was excellent but we found a charming B & B (w/out the B) and will return for future stays. You really need to stay a week to take it all in. The vegetation on the grounds was so interesting and beautiful. Thanks

My husband and I were making our way down the west coast from Portland to Napa, and Smith River seemed like a good place to make a stop before heading into the Redwoods. There didn't seem to be a lot of great choices for affordable, comfortable lodgings in the area, but we sure found a gem in Casa Rubio. We arrived and were warmly greeted by Tony Rubio, who helped us settle into the Suite, which is one of about 4 different rooms on the property. Now, if you're looking for a five star hotel with premier amenities and concierge services at your fingertips, don't stay here. If, on the other hand, you're looking for a quiet, romantic, and private getaway, look no further. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and the next best thing to being home. The view of the ocean and Tony's gardens from our deck was second to none, and it was a quick 30-second walk down a well landscaped path to a great beach (which, if you go at low tide, you're sure to see TONS of starfish and sea anemones!). Tony set out some delicious pastries for the next morning's breakfast, and made sure that every detail was attended to. We especially loved visits from his ultra friendly cat Luna and his dog Chica, who stroll the grounds and make the guest feel at home.

Tony recommended the Nautical Inn Restaurant, which is about a 10 minute walk down the beach, and he wasn't kidding when he said they had the best halibut around. Because we had watched the sun set prior to eating, it was dark by the time we had finished our meal, and we were concerned about how we were going to find Casa Rubio with no moonlight--the waitress reassured us that we would be completely safe if we walked along the road, but she lent us a flashlight if we chose to walk the beach back to the house. Maybe its just me, but everyone in Smith River seems to be so welcoming and friendly!

In short, I have never been to a place so relaxing, warm and welcoming as Casa Rubio. We are already talking about coming back for week's stay on one of our future anniversaries. Thank you again, Tony, and vaya con dios!
