This is a terrific, canyon located, ultra casual steakhouse with personality and an interesting history. Don't go expecting to start with a deep green, leafy salad with micro herbs and multiple dressings. The salad - no changes there over the decades, is basic and crisp iceberg with their house vinaigrette. And the Steaks? They are delicious. There is nothing else quite like this restaurant. People from all walks of life, some of them being well known, dine here regularly and have for decades, if that's saying something special about the place. And, if your timing is just so - usually early evening, canyon dwellers pass by with their horses, walking so slowly you'd swear they hold the secret to a 30 hour day.

Trees growing through the middle. Ok food. Old school steakhouse. Food was great back in the day, but It's gone down hill since. It's a must visit if you're in Trabuco Canyon.

See my previous review about the great food. However, on my last two visits (within the last six weeks) I've noticed the service is slipping. We had to ask for water three times, two different wait staff, no one checked back to see if we needed anything more, the waitstaff tried to box up leftovers while the main person was only halfway done with their meal, and then no one came back to pick up the check. Management needs to keep a closer eye on service or they'll lose many patrons. Another thing: when taking reservations, they ask if it's a special event, but then they don't do anything to acknowledge the event. Why bother asking if that's the case? We celebrated a promotion and a birthday.

About two decades ago, my wife and I had a great steak at Trabuco Oaks steakhouse. She couldn't finish hers, so she was looking forward to eating steak the next day except, she left her "doggy bag" in the restaurant! In 20+ years, she had not forgotten the regret that came with that experience. So, we were passing through the other day and we decided to stop in. Got there early and had the place all to ourselves. The rib-eye was perfect. So was the martini (double olive) and the massive baked potato with all the fixings. Our waiter, Mark, could not have been more attentive. So, what kept them from getting that elusive 5th star? Well, part of the history of Trabuco Oaks is that, for years, if you showed up wearing a tie, it was cut off and mounted somewhere in the restaurant. After years of doing this, the place is covered in ties!!! As you might imagine, all those ties are hard to dust and impossible to clean and, the result is a musty order that made me wish the owners had found something else to do to build a unique tradition around. Maybe the ties would have been less noticeable if the place was full of people. End the end, we had a GREAT meal that I would easily rate at 5-stars!

Disappointment is the best word to describe our dinner experience at Trabuco Oaks. I was a long Trabuco Oaks fan 10-15 years ago. Decided we wanted a good steak and said let's go to Trabuco Oaks. First the restaurant hasn't changed in 15 years except more dirt and dust. Nostalgia is one word to describe the restaurant. Just not clean is another. Our booth had two big rips in the seat vinyl and as I looked around the restaurant most of the chairs all had rips in them also. The plastic red and white table cloth had stains on it. Not to be picky but after you have noticed how run down the restaurant is than to have the waiter serve your steak and his shirt is full of stains like he rubbed his hands on it, it becomes a little too much. I know my meat and they served a rib-eye that is USDA Choice grade. You would think that if you are paying $40.00 for a steak you would get Prime Grade. On the positive side the food did come out hot and sizzling. If you want to pay a high price for Nostalgia than Trabuco Oaks is for you. If you are looking for a quality steak with a clean environment than you might consider somewhere else.
