Review of Sunset State Beach

Sunset State Beach
Reviewed July 29, 2018 via mobile

My family went to this beach in the morning and again in the evening. The coastal fog prevented us from watching the sunset but the lack of crowds was a bonus. We basically had the whole beach to ourselves. The walking path was well maintained and the flowers lining the path were incredible! It was too cold to swim but still the visit was great.

Nice and clean. Hot coin showers available at campsites. Can walk or drive to beach from campsites. Ample parking. It can be a bit chilly in the evenings, even in summer.

While the parking at this park is limited, it has the effect of limiting the number of people on the beach. We were able to enjoy a quiet afternoon on the beach. It was a bit windy but beautiful.

I love that this beach is never very crowded, and even when there are more people down there, the beach is so long and wide you can always find some space to yourself. It's very flat and can be quite windy. It's the best place I know of to find sand dollars, although they of course come and go, so if there's not a lot when you come, try again another time. It's also a good place for dogs because there's not a lot of people. If you walk about half a mile down to the right you will reach the beginnings of "private beach" land which has no leash rules (as far as I understand). I may or may not also let my dog off leash before that point as well. Just keep an eye out for snowy plover nesting areas that are usually roped off, but if you find some that aren't roped off keep your dogs away (parents will abandon their chicks if they get too freaked out). The only downside about this beach is that there is no nearby free parking, you pretty much have no choice but to pay the $10 parking fee. But this fee goes to supporting state beaches and parks, so it's well worth the small cost.

Was excited when I saw and read the reviews and totally went to find sand dollars.
I did manage to find some pieces, but not any in a whole. If you are thinking of going, I had more success at the beach to the south, not to the north once you get in. (It is a state park, so you need to pay $10 per car to get in) From there, keep walking along the shore towards the south a little. And also, please be careful, because they DO crumble easily. By the time I got home from our vacation, most of them were broken into even smaller pieces!
