This is NOT a 5 star hotel but in Basalt you wouldn't WANT one. The location of this small motel is right along the Frying Pan river and, when it's running, there's a lovely sound from the river. It's lovely to sit and watch it flow by, as well. While nothing fancy, the rooms are large with microwave, fridge and flat screen TV. There's even a small sitting area. They serve a continental breakfast but we went across the street for breakfast instead. There are several very nice restaurants within walking distance (everything in Basalt is in walking distance) and you are only a few miles from Aspen, Snowmass, Carbondale and Glenwood Springs. It's a one-street town but, if you're fishing or hiking, it's a nice place

Room Tip: DEFINITELY get a room facing the river. Otherwise you are facing parking lots

Rooms were a little dark but had all necessary facilities and spotlessly clean. We had a room by the river which was well worth paying the extra as we could sit in the garden by the water and hear the river at night.

The Aspenalt is a good hotel in the Aspen area (Aspen being about 25 minutes south) but nothing special. The rooms are clean and well appointed, the place is well-lit, parking is convenient, and the breakfast area is at or above average. Again, nothing special - hotel-wise. But it is right on the Fryng Pan river - 14 feet or so to the north - and that is special. I recommend a dinner at the Basalt Bistro - within very easy walking distance of the Aspenalt - or at any of the half-dozen other downtown Basalt restaurants. There are two ways to walk from downtown Basalt to the Aspenalt - you'll pass a wine store on each - and a quick stop for a Merlt or a Cab is a nice touch.

Make sure you arrange for the riverside room in the center building. There is a table with chairs in the common area between your room and the river, and a little wine, the cool Colorado evening air, and the energy of the river flowing by makes for an intense and joyously wonderful opportunity to share your life with your partner. Once you retire to your room - leaving the window open to fill your space with the music of the river - you will realize that it's not just the building or Frette sheets or some clever architectural touch that can make a hotel splendid - sometimes it is the setting. We have spent a number of "getaway" nights at the Aspenalt. It's a wonderful place for such things.

Room Tip: center building - on the river side

I have stayed once a year over about ten years for 3-7 days each at the Aspenalt and can say that it has stayed consistent over that period. It is quite comfortable albeit basic. The real pluses are two: being in Basalt and being right on the Fryingpan River. Most of the hotel's rooms are within 30 yards of the delightful Fryingpan, providing a relaxing and woodsy break from the glitz of Aspen or highway conformity of the other accommodations further "down valley". Basalt is a nice tidy, only slightly touristic town--very relaxing--that provides easy access both to Aspen (consider taking the bus in as traffic and parking can be difficult) and the mountains, especially up the Fryingpan.

Have breakfast at the Two Rivers Cafe for both an excellent value and feeling for the locals.

Why do i go there every year? World class trout fishing--a mecca for fly fishers--with two excellent fly shops in town.

Be sure to get a room on the river--some are not.

Room Tip: Get one On the river only.

This hotel is a great option if you're looking for a clean, convenient place to sleep. If you're looking for luxury, the Aspenalt will be a disappointment. I've stayed here countless times for business, and it's always been good.
