Owner description: Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art is temporarily closed to expand our universe! The museum’s new building, located at 12th Avenue and Bannock Street and expected to open in fall 2017, will offer visitors an enhanced experience with approximately 65% more display space while staying true to the salon style and intimate atmosphere for which the Kirkland is known. The museum’s three collections are: • International Decorative Art—A celebrated collection including notable examples of every major design period from Arts & Crafts to Postmodern. • Colorado & Regional Art—The largest repository of art showcasing the state and region’s talent, concentrating on the 1850s through the 1990s with about 6,000 works more than 600 artists. • Vance Kirkland Retrospective—Kirkland (1904–1981) is generally considered Colorado’s most distinguished modern painter. About 550 paintings and about 600 drawings and prints are held in his estate collection. Central to the move, Vance Kirkland’s art school & studio building (built 1910–1911 for Henry Read's Students' School of Art) will be relocated to Bannock Street and oriented in the same direction. In a feat of engineering, the 1,384 square foot building will be detached from the existing museum, moved eight blocks west and placed on the north side of the new museum about September 2016.

Lots to see. Things are arranged in a home like scale as opposed to huge rooms. Something for everyone.

“The stuff is everywhere!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 March 2012

What do wall-sized paintings, tiny teacups and retro furniture have in common? It and more are all here - on the floor, on the walls, on cabinets, on shelves - it's a hoarder's paradise! None of it is junk, so you have to allow plenty of time to stroll through once or even twice to see it all. The Arts and Crafts and Art Deco periods are especially well-represented in furniture, glass and ceramics by over 100 artists of the time. Vance Kirkland's studio itself has been preserved and you can see how he suspended himself over his large canvases for hours at a time. Spend a leisurely few hours browsing through and you'll discover beautiful treasures tucked away in odd places in every room.

“Really Special - One of a Kind”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 March 2012

The Kirkland is one of those places that is very individual, great to explore and is not just like all of the other museums. Maybe not a great place for young kids as there is a lot that is "don't touch" here.

“Quirky, Beautiful, Absolutely Worth it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 February 2012

Free tours are offered wednesday through saturday from 1:30 and there seem to be pretty good crowds and groups at all times. The exhibits are breathtaking, quirky, crazy and the atmosphere is so different from other museums - almost homey!
A must-do when you're in Denver!

“Great small art museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

Vance Kirkland was a wonderful painter and this museum, which includes his studio, should not be missed by any art lover. Knocked my socks off. I didn't know anything about it until I saw in mentioned in Travel Advised. What a great experienced.
