“A Durango Hideaway”
Review of Smiley Cafe

Smiley Cafe
Ranked #13 of 13 Coffee & Tea in Durango
Price range: US$5 - US$12
Description: Smiley Cafe is Durango's Hidden Gem featuring hand crafted sandwiches, garden fresh salads, breakfast burritos, gluten-free quiche and a variety of gluten-free baked goods. Everything is self-serve and made fresh in house. Some of the best coffee in Durango featuring locally roasted 81301 Coffee. We serve breakfast, lunch, unbeatable quiches and must-have lattes, cappucinos, chai and our own in-house made cold brew. We are proud to support fellow local business by purchasing local, organic greens from High Pine Produce, local roasted coffee, locally made bread and chai and our local Boar's Head distributor. We are located in the old Smiley Junior High Building; a beautifully re-purposed hub in Durango.

This lovely little cafe is off the beaten path, located in the Smiley Building, an old school that was skillfully remodeled and re-visioned into a thriving community eco-building. The Smiley Cafe is the foodie part. In this comfortable, local-hangout lobby atmosphere the Cafe offers a limited variety of coffees, teas & healthy choices for breakfast, lunch and snack fare. It's finding the place and enjoying the ambiance that makes this quest worthwhile. Since you are already in the neighborhood, take a stroll down the tree canopies "Boulevard" (3rd Ave) and notice the beautifully restored Victorian homes. I highly recommend supporting this little jewel and getting to know a part of Durango not all tourists bother to seek out.

You can't miss the old Smiley Building on East Third Avenue, near the junction with Florida Road. It was Smiley Junior High School for many years and now has several businesses residing in it. The Smiley Cafe is entered through the door off the small parking lot on Third. (It is shared with the local funeral home.) We were there for lunch. They offer tables inside and on the sidewalk. The menu is on a big board and it is "order, pay, choose a table" fare. It's sort of a pass-through dining experience with very little attention to ambience or decor...almost like a faculty lounge gone large. The food was very good. We had veggie soup and a delicious frittata muffin. The quiche and pastries looked fresh and tempting as well. There were many coffee and drink choices. The prices were reasonable for Durango. The best feature was a young man playing an upright piano for the diners. He played, from memory, for well over an hour and never repeated a song. Nice touch. It is a perfect lunch spot if you're enjoying a walking tour of historic Third Avenue homes. Start across the street near the aforementioned junction with Florida Rd., then stroll south to 6th St., cross at the traffic light to come back down the other side of Third to Smiley.
