It’s well worth the 15-minute drive from Durango to eat at the Cafe Kennebec. It’s casual yet elegant. There are multiple inside rooms plus an outside patio. Seating is well separated and servers wear masks. The walls have attractive art, there’s a nice fireplace and there is a bar area. Reservations are required; carry out also is available. They are open only for dinner and for brunch on weekends.

The dinner menu had several nicely prepared and presented entrees, pasta dishes, salads and small dishes. The wine list is long; we got excellent selections for wine from our server. There are many beers including craft beers.

The only comments less than positive are that the dining area probably gets quite loud when it is full of diners and the meals were salty. Otherwise, everything was excellent.

My favorite night is Tuesday at Kennebec, when they have their Mexican specials. I'll order the very filling and delicious chile relleno with bites of steak and potato in a red sauce ($15?), while my wife loves the chicken enchiladas that come with a green chili sauce ($14?)--yum! They have a full bar, so you can augment your meal with beer, wine or a margarita. The entrees come with black beans and rice that are also very tasty. If you save room, they have a large selection of deserts: carrot cake, sour cream apple pie, chocolate mousse cake, among other tempting treats. Enjoy!

Service, food choices, presentation, and interior are welcoming and satisfying. Deceptive exterior with very, very good food and enough choices for even the pickiest diner. A must stop in the Durango-Hesperus area.

I was so excited to bring my out of town company to Kennebec. There were four of us.
We arrived at 6 and when we arrived the owner was working on seating people and seemed irritated and seated someone ahead of us who didn't have reservation. She said be patient, I'll be right with you. Ok.
We ordered a bottle of wine and small plates to start our evening. If the small plates were indication of the evening ahead we were set. After we finished our small plates and the wine our dinner came out 1 1/2 hours later.
Everyone around us was seated later than us and they had their checks and were headed out. The owner came by and asked how we were and we told her we have not received our dinner. The food was out soon. The waiter proceeded to tell us that they were very busy and everyone was having to wait. We said on the patio everyone was served well before us and that did not seem to be correct. They offered free desserts, but we did not want to dessert. Eventually they comped two of the entrees. There was not an apology by the owner.
I was so disappointed and embarrassed. I am not sure if our order was ever turned in or if being on the patio we were ignored. Our experience was very disappointing and expensive.

I have discussed your visit with my mother in detail, who is the owner. She would like to respond in that she understands that your perception is your reality. We have reviewed your ticket in our system and would like to respond accordingly. It is our understanding that 2 of your guests arrived at 6:00 and the other two did not arrive until 6:30. Your ticket shows that you had a three course meal, appetizers, salad/soup and then entrees as well as wine that was discounted 50%. I show that you left at 8:19. The timing for a party of 4 for a three course meal seems right on for this situation. Your order was turned in on time and the location of where you were sitting had nothing to do with it. I am sorry that your visit was a disappointment. As for the expense, I do not know what to say given two full priced entrees were comped and a bottle of wine was 50% off. We wish you the best in your future dining experiences.

Regards,
Adrienne
